I'd like to find out what size MAF should go with what size Throttle Body to fit an Explorer intake? I'm guessing that wanting to fit anything bigger than 65mm will be wasted on the Explorer as it would be at it's limit for 65mm. Am I right?
Can I get some thoughts on this or even a rule-of-thumb on how to match MAF and TB?

how big d'ya wanna go?
the main probs with going oversize with these are
Does the engine need it? otherwise you will over "carburate" the engine, causing a boggier jump off the line as the size of the the TB reduces velocity thru the MAFS causing the engine to be a bit flat to get going, mind you this is a bigger problem in auto's than manuals.
but size overall, the explorer will handle 75mm if opened up to suit, just don't go too smooth with the ported finnish as this reduces turbulance into the heads causing poorly mixed air/fuel.
You will always see articles in mags about the higher power figures associated with these upgrades, but rarely you see the dyno report showing the reduced torque down low in the revs
NASCARS used to be limmited to a 2 barrel 500cfm holley, look at the power they produced well over 550hp.
65mm TB flows around 420cfm
the main reason I typed this is , I have done these mods myself and had minimal gains, the $ could be spent on better mods with bigger gains.
a cam change will cost around the same, and will give better results.
Have you changed the intake manifold, as I noticed in you're pics you had a HO at the time?

It's generally suggested that the MAF be at least 5mm bigger than the T/B. Seeing that the max you can go with the explorer is 65mm, 70-75mm will be fine for the MAF.

Atleast you don't have to work 60+hrs a week to pay 4 the dushy, unless its a pretty flash one with shockies, cool bell, leather upholstry and 47 gears!

I wouldn't call that wasting money.. Something you've actually pointed out that I'm incapable of doing with my 'vehicle'.

2 brand new (2 day old) 295/50 15's ,half a bottle of whiskey, top gear for 400m's ,and a mate with a camera & a commodore, seemed a good idea at the time!
But the defect for having no tread, car 2 low, 2 loud ,2 many emissions & only registered as a 3.3L XD didn't seem that good after all.
Whats wrong wit da bike? t'should B able 2 do that no probs!

Well as you said, the Explorer has a 65mm openign so going any larger is a waste of time anyway, and even if you could go larger the 65mm TB flows over 600cfm, enough air for 290kw. As for the MAF, a 70mm MAF would easily outflow the TB but I would probably look at something like the Pro-M Bullet 75mm MAF which flows over 950cfm, you can't really go too big with MAFs as long as they have a good design which most of the factory and aftermarket ones do.

First of all what are the rest of your engine/car specs?
If it's otherwise stock, the 65 is the best size to maintain your low end torque and the stock MAF will be fine in this case too.

I currently have the stock HO manifold and E7 heads. I'm starting to think of replacing these with say, the Explorer intake and a pair of GT40P heads, which would greatly improve the flow. All that's left that is important is understanding the MAF / TB relationship and what I wanted to confirm was whether the EL GT and the AU V8's came equiped with a 65mm MAF and a 65mm TB or if they had a slightly larger MAF against the 65mm TB.
Can someone confirm this?
