hypotheticaly, if one was to remove the MAF and run an ecu with an internal MAP sensor, EMS for example in a piggyback fashion to control injector pulse and ignition timing only in a EB-ED 5L would this cause any issues with auto trans control?
does the auto rely on a load signal from the MAF to detirmine shift points firmness etc? or is it based on TPS-RPM-roadspeed? any thoughts guys? cheers, luke |

Hmm it would depend on what signals the ECU sends to the Auto computer if it doesnt have any input to it then i cant see it being an issue as the auto computer runs the box not the ecu.

It causes no issues. This is the exact way my 8860 is hooked up to my 5.0. The V8 has a seperate TCM, and as long as it still sees TPS and road speed it still works fine.

theres been a few BA XR8 ecu's on ebay for peanuts, seems the easiest way to me.
not to mention they can be flashed to suit the engines needs quite easily too

hows that easier?
u wil neva hav the adjustment of an aftermarket ecu |

as brett said.. it doesnt matter.. as long as you leave your gearbox tps and roadspeed connected it all works fine.. (unplug the tps and see what happens.. i dare you

u wil neva hav the adjustment of an aftermarket ecu not trying to flame you or anything, but, in fact its a lot better to flash tune/edit a factory tune as there is so many more load points then most aftermarket ecu's. look at all the ls1's making big hp on the std ecu, not many out there who go to an aftermarket set up. same with the xr6t's, if you look at most aftermarket ones they have something like 3000 load points (ems 8860=3072) where a std ecu can have up to 12000 load points. they do this so they can get there std car to perform the same all the time, different altitudes, temp, etc... where most a/m are built to be tuned for wide open throttle performance. so unless your going top end motec type ecu's the factory ones can be tuned more finely for drivability, but who can afford that, lol. but with that being said it would not be cost effective to put a ba ecu into an earlier model.

as yobboford stated the factory ecu has so many map points, and to get an aftermarket unit that equivalent you would have to spend a packet
$200 for the ecu, and lets say $200 for the harness and $500 for the tuner. And its LEGAL, last time I enquired it was illegal to have an adjustable ecu in NSW just seems easier to me cheers kenny

ok i see your point regarding load points
but i dont think its as big an issue as u are making out, but thats just me also an ecu change of any kind is ilegal in SA so that doesnt help at all thirdly i like the flexibility of an aftermarket setup ie user definable outputs etc that just arent available with factory ecus and yeah i dont see it being cost efective at all but cheers for the input |

didn't even think bout the cam sensors, but I believe that there are many different programs/configurations that can be flashed into the ecu, as I will be using a program based on the XR6T.
I could be wrong, but I'm sure that there would be a program similar to that of the AU 5 litre ,or even the 5.8/6.0 lightweight yankee V8 that is coming to Aust in the Orion? Just food for thought? cheers kenny

totaly different settup dude,
imho more expensive and more difficult to sort out than an aftermarket ecu btw ive yet to hear of anyone who has found a correctly set up ems to hav less tune stabillty than a factory ecu the fact that the ems or most aftermaket ecus run wideband o2 sensors, respond vast amounts faster in closed loop mode, can be configured for much broader closed loop conditions and larger, more accurate correction percentages more than makes up for the reduced amount of load points as far as im concerned case closed |
