mines only got 85000km on it but in the 2 years i've had it i only ever give it helix ultra (full synthetic 5-40). never taps on start up or when warm.
like ebxr8380 said, oil won't be causing the noise. sometimes oil can cover up an issue though but it doesn't fix it.

HPR 15 is 15/40 or 15 /50
I run in mine with 700 odd h.p... I would say 5 / 40 is thin...

Another vote for HPR15 which is 15W-60, you could run a thinner grade in winter but I wouldn't go below 10W-50 in a motor with 150,000kms +

there is no set point in a engine's life where you start using thicker oil. every motor will be different depending on its life history. in my opinion, putting thicker oils in unnecissarily will create more friction and more wear.
i had an ef xr6 (not a windsor but overhead cam) with 293000km on the clock and i was using the same oil i am now, shell helix ultra 5 - 40!! just because the odometer read high doesn't mean i have to put thicker oil in. if its not using it or making weird noises there is no need to change. just a side note, with modern oils, don't be too concerned about the colour of it after its been in your engine for even just a few days. they have many cleaning products in them as well and are meant to go dirty.

At a Club meeting we had oil techs there and as far as I understand its the lower visc number that matters in cold or start up conditions.. In hot conditions its the higher visc number...
I asked if it was better to have a wide visc raing?? Said YES .... But I often wander the oil's efficiancy ??? Btw diesel oils tend to better shearing protection, but these days with roller cams etc except for rings there isin't much metal on metal contact that doesn't have pressurised oil between them, or roller bearings... The older flat tappet engines can run fine on diesel type oils... From memory its the zink added that helps. Due to epa etc companies have lowered its content in oil for cars... Same with bearings no lead ..

Agreed HPR15 is 15/60.
Helix Plus is 15/50 not a bad oil we used it exclusively at the dealership when I was a mechanic and it kept the engines nice and clean. I use it for the old lady's VS Commo.
