I am currently in the process of fitting underdrives to my 5.0L, but have hit a snag with getting the friggin alternator pulley nut off.
Any hints or suggestions, because if nobody can come up with a better plan, i'm going to attack the f**k tommorow with a big set of vice grips and totally destroy the old pulley...(no biggie I suppose as I'm replacing it anyway, just don't want to damage the alternator in my mad frenzied attack on the mongrel ![]() Just a clue on where i'm up to.....I still have the drive belt fitted, but the engine still turns over quite easily....therefore the nut no crackie! Have tried applying extra force on the drivebelt, but that does nothing as the tensioner just takes up the slack. If Anybody who has been in a similar position and can offer assistance, it would be greatly appreciated ![]() Cheers, Mick

Leave the belt on, put on a socket with a breaker bar and give the bar a very very sharp quick smack with a hammer. It needs shock to come loose, hell some have even used rattle guns for this reason. Good luck

hahaha! even the missus suggested the rattle gun..........."don't you have one of those thingies the tyre shops use" she said
![]() ![]() ![]() "I'll just pull one out of my a**" was the response....but i've chilled with a few beers since then ![]() I have been smacking the s**t out of my ratchet with a 24mm socket attached, but the b**ch doesn't wanna crack ![]() I'll have another go tommorow after the WD-40 has had time to seep in, and I have replenished my patience. Thanks mate ![]()

Mine was too tight, a rattle gun couldn't get it off. Pulled the bastard apart, locked it in a vice to get it off..

Rattle gun did mine. Took no time at all. Locked it in place with a screwdriver in the housing( probably not good for it though)

Yeah! thanks Waggin, figured that bit out
![]() With the majority off workshops closed until after new years, guess I'll just have to wait before I can access a rattle gun, have to still get the water pump pulley machined anyway, so I suppose i'll just go back outside and finish the thermo install and be content with that for now.

Get an old belt of some sort, wrap it around the pulley, and anchor the other end around something. It should spin and then grip up on itself, getting tighter as you apply more pressure.

Now that could work as I just installed the new serp belt ready for the underdrives, but the old one is still intact just looking a bit old, but if I break it trying this method then no loss really. Now to find somewhere in the engine bay to anckor it to
![]() BTW, the thermo's are all in and working perfectly, so at least I achieved something before the weekend was over ![]() Cheers, Mick
