ok..i f**k up...ive over-tightened the sum plug & stripped the thread on the sump...How do i fix this without replacing the sump......PLEEEEEASE HELP

it might be possible to rethread it as a temporary measure, but dont get your hopes up

If it is really stripped badly then you could just tap it out to the next size and get a new larger bolt. Otherwise as chunkz said check out what supercheap etc have, I am sure I have seen rethreading compunds, never payed much attention to them though so I wouldn't know what they would suit.

hey chunkz, if this happended at work and i couldnt get a new sump straight away (im a mechanic) i would try clean out the tread with a tap or go about getting a helicoil kit to suit the sump plug, prolly get 1 from repco or a engeering shop. the kit consits of a tap, and installing tool and a few other tools and the helicoils which kinda look like a compressed spring. They are the thread replacements.
But with that said i dont know how long it would last and u'd wanta try and make sure u got all the metal filing out of the bottom of the sump. good luck your prolly gonna have to get a new sump eventully. sorry bro. |

helicoil but liek others said it temporary ( yet spark threads get hellicoiled all teh time and last ) or replace the sump

difference is that sparkplugs screw into a lot more metal than a sump plug does, which is why sump plugs strip out so easily in the first place

There are kits out there with taps and plugs just for this...We have them at work..Auto one etc have them...

bloody oath its possible. you will need to re-tap the thread with an apropriate size tap then ofcourse you will need a sump plug to match

all you need is an over size sump plug. and a tap to suit. no need to take the sump off at all, just cover the tap with grease and the shavings will stick to it.
any thing that might get into the sump will get cought in the oil pick up strainer or the oil filter. |

true about the strainer and the filter but with that said i wouldnt like any decent chunks of metal to slide forward into the timing gear and chain. it happend to my mates mums car..... not pretty. but gee's you would have to be unlucky to get a peice big enuf to upset it.
