i have an el v8 ex cop car, Apparently they came with a speed sensitive rack although i have never felt the steering get heavier at speed.
The rack has a fair bit of play and the turning circle is the worst ive ever had in any car(lots of 3 point turns). Is there any way i can identify if the rack is speed sensitive just by looking at it(extra sensors etc)?

I was pretty sure that speed sensitive steering only increases the assistance at low speeds and doesn't change anything at high speeds.

Yeah was mainly a feature for luxury models, fairlanes, ltds etc. Gets lighter at lower speeds but I couldn't tell. When you disable it altogether you can DEFINITELY tell.

I can testify to this as I just replaced mine..
the power head of the speed sensitive one is about 2 inches taller than the normal one.. it does have the round plug and it does make a huge difference........ if you want to see if it is working... get on a straight deserted road and do about 75 km... move from one side of the lane to the other briskly while slowly breaking.. you will notice in at least one spot that it gets noticeably easier to steer as you slow down. |

It turns out my rack isnt speed sensitive and it also has no sensors or switches that i could see either, how can that be.
Ford says it came stock from the factory with a speed sentive rack, mind you didnt i hear someone say its more a fairmont/fairlane luxo thing. The car in question is a gli poverty pack.

SSPS is only fitted to Fairmont and Fairlane Ghias as far as I know.
It was disabled on the Fairlane By Tickford. |

If you can't beat them, join them ay!!
And no unless someone, in a moment of rampant stupidity, decided to mod thier poverty pack to take the SSPS. It doesn't have it.

No.. not normal..
all EL racks have at least one plug on it... the normal one has a rectangular plug for pressure sensor.. the ghia one has a round plug on a lead... all of them have plugs though.. even my EA has the pressure sensor plug. |
