I decided to road test an automatic 250 pursuit ute and t3 te50 manual sedan today and walked away a little disappointed.
engine felt very rough through the rev range especialy the manual and didn't feel like revving. The automatic ute had NO BALLS even when provoked with the T bar. The sedan went ok but not much better then my 5.0l to 120-130 clicks, I suppose you feel the difference between 140-200 in fourth? You can really feel the extra weight across the front with the cast iron heads the 5.0l svo headed variety just seems a little sharper in the steering. The t3650 gearbox is a dog!!! bulky and with a very wide gate making it frustrating when trying to quick shift. conclusion: Its not that I own one but the 220kw 5L with T5 isn't that far off the pace with considerably better fuel economy to boot. the windsor feels as if it was always ment to be 5000cc (4937cc). Revs freely and will probably prove more reliable in the long term if driven with conviction. |

Have you ever seen the two in the flesh ?
The 5.0 will shake to pieces long before the 5.6, which has far superior crank, rods (& bolts) & pistons.

I've actually seen a couple of these engines split crankshafts from severe abuse. Yet to see a 5.0l suffer similar faith.

I must be lucky mine revs very freely and as far as balls goes I bought it as a demo model over the BA XR8 and BA Pursuit because it felt like it had more balls and so far in std form a BA XR8 is no contest when I've run them and GT's back off when a sh*tty old AU gives em a run for their money. Yeh I agree that the 220 is not that far behind and probably represents better value for money but overall even the stats put the 5.6 at over 3/4 a second quicker to 100km/h in a heavier car.

As I said probably notice real difference in fourth gear where the 220 runs out of puff after 160 kmh. The t3 would truck on to 180 kmh. before things would start to slow.

I agree, and disagree in parts
I find the T3 gearbox to be heavy...cannot disagree with that, but I think it suits the demeanor of the car The engine does sound harsh too, however step it over 3000rpm and they absolutely take off. 1st is too short however Can sit on 100km in 5th gear, poke the accelerator without downshifting and out accelerate most of the other cars on the highway

The T3's will rape any other 5.0l Falcon.
The were running 14 flat stock! and thats real life, not some magazine test. The 5.0l Falcons, even the 220's didn't run within half a second of the strokers. The T3's do sound and feel like a harsh car, but thats basically what they were... Meant to be a genuine competitor for the HSV's and the LS1. The T3's would be the ultimate AU, by a long margin... |

I thought it would feel a lot quicker then it did for instance.....
drive a au xr6 manual and then hop into an equivelant xr8 manual and the difference is like holy s**t!!!!! All over the rev range. Their is only .7 seconds difference in 400m time WTF?????? Same difference between 220xr8 and t3 te50 but definitely doesn't feel like it up to 120kmh. The stoker seems to only have a top end advantage, were it has the torque to overcome increased wind drag and frictional forces. |

I now do 0-100 in one gear change to 2nd where as before i would have to hit 3rd to get to 100km/h. At the same time I pulled 5th back from 0.62 to 0.74 to give it a similar final drive and 4th is really happy now at anything under 100 without sounding the least bit stressed. it wouldn't be everyones cup of tea but I mostly cruise my car and it's a real dream. |

That does sound like a good plan. Half the time i start in 2nd because 1st is just so short.
I will have to investigate this in the future.
