HI everyone. I plan on replacing my current timing chain on my XR8 but I'm not sure whether or not to replace it with a double row timing chain or with a gear drive. Can any other windsor owners please give me some feedback about which they prefer and why. I know that the gears are much noiser but i have also heard that some people really like the whine that they give (similar to a blower i guess). Cheers.

AFAIK the standard windsor has a double row timing chain. Only heard that tho, never taken it apart myself.

Yeah i love the sound the timing gears make, but i've heard they're not a good idea. Not sure why tho....

Yeah the Windsor has a double row timing chain. You can't use gear drives on EFI 5.0's as they make too much mechanical noise and the knock sensor detects it as pinging, and retards the ignition.

If you want your car to sound like it has a blower, there's one way to do it......

Shouldnt be a problem with E series windsors as no knock sensors in them - apparantley some funky harmonics within the engine itself. AU may be a different story....(isnt it always? lol)

Just get a good quality double row chain like a Rollmaster. You can get some gear drives that fit the EFI Windsors but they offer no real advantage, cost a lot and take quite a bit of messing around to make fit properly.

Ypu the ol' Windsor is a bit odd, it naturally creates the harmonics that the knock sensors adjust to. Ford tried using them but found the car kept retarding itself..

I was toying with the idea of getting a gear drive a few years back. I then went for a ride in a mates EL XR8 with gear drive. The noise was a novelty for the first 5 mins - after that, it gave me a headache.

dont know about windsor but ive got gears in clevo and will never go back to chain, i went against everyone saying that theres nothing wrong with chains and havnt looked back
after about 6 years and heaps of big revs and a s**t load of ks i pulled clevo apart and you could nearly jump a tooth on the chain - they just stretched that much
under normal driving conditions that may not happen , but theres many on the site that drive normally

Might be the case in Clevo's but I have seen a nuber of EFI windsor chains with 200,000+kms on them and they are still nice and tight.

Yep you can't beat a roller cam...Chain is o/k but get good quality one.From $80

ive got gear drives on my Clevo, the engine responds better and the noise isnt that bad, i can hardly notice it, but i dont know about the EFI Windors though, but heres some sites though.

Gear drives knock your cam bearing's around a bit
i dont know how the knock sensor would cope tho
