gday all, have a December 1990 XF ute, 4.1l, 250 crossflow (like the older xf's) 5 speed manual. the old girl has an extremely rough idle. was set to idle around the 750rpm mark, was going great for a while then decided to just not idle at all. i then adjusted the mixtures so it idles at around 900- 1000rpm and is rough as guts.just prior to the idle playing up i changed plugs, dizzy cap, rotor button, leads & fuel filter. mechanic had a look at it, checked all vac hoses, no probs there.

any suggestions as to what it maybe??

cheers mick

all XF's had a crossflow.

may be time for a carby rebuild. idle circuit may be full of dirt, debris etc

try the aussie carby rebuild

carefull as it can hurt - break ya hand etc.

remove the air cleaner etc.
build up the rev's to around 1500
cup your hand over the carby (sealing 95% the air supply) forcing debris out of the jets due to vacuum.

half a can of carby cleaner then give it a flogging.

Chances are I may be wrong, but being a ute theres a high chance of a gas system yeh?

you could try removing the mixture screw and cleaning it up.
a few xf's ive worked on have had crud on the needle when i took them out.
i gave it a good spray with carby cleaner in there and a bit of dirt came out, replaced the screw and started them up and no more idle problems.
the screw is on the passenger side lower section of the carby, base setting is 1.5 turns out?

had a muck around with carby this morning. changed the fuel filter and adjusted mixing screw, still idles rough! had to turn the mixing screw right in, idles between 900 - 1100rpm, wont idle at all otherwise. sprayed carby cleaner into it, stil no change.

anyone got a spare webber for sale to suit ?

did you take the mixture screw right out and spray carby cleaner in the thread?
screwing it right in should stall the motor.
