I am restoring a 63 XL falcon and with the body work almost completed, the time is here to really decide what to do about an engine. If the car was for me the answer would be windsor but it is for my daughter who gets her licence in the next few months. I currently have a 144 and 2 spd auto that needs rebuilding. I dont want to spend time and money on the 144. Even though it was economical which my daughter will want, it was very gutless especially with the 2 spd. Is there a way to get a bit more out of the 144, Head swaps etc... Are all pre cross flow heads the same compression wise and do they interchange? I would really just like to reco a 170 or 200 and 3 spd auto and just use that but not too many around in Qld. Can someone suggest a way to get some life into the 144 or suggest a good place to find a 170 or 200, would be much appreciated. Also I have seen a 250 2V head on a 170. How does this go for compression???

HI DON'T KNOW IF THERE IS ANY ONE ELSE ON HERE WHO KNOWS ANY THING ABOUT OLD STUFF. THERE WAS A 250 & C4 OUT OF ANY XY IN MUSCLE CAR MAG. TROUBLE WAS IT'S IN MELB. I DO KNOW A GUY WHO WRECKS OLD TIN IN MELB HE PROBABLY HAS ONE. MY MANUALS ONLY GO BACK TO XR, & MY MEMORY ONLY GOES BACK TO YESTERDAY, REGARDS TPVM.

Thats ok I appreciate any replies. This car is so original and unmolested, there wasnt even a wire out of place, the original vac wipers and foot pump washers still work perfectly. All I have modified is the brakes and I feel bad about that but I have used XP Fairmont disc brakes and a remote booster so it's really an improvement I suppose, + 14" wheels to suit the brakes. What I'm getting at is I dont want to modify or cut it up too much or at all. If I could use a different head on the 144 or pick up a good 170 or 200, i think thats the way to go. Sorry TPVM, freighting motors from Vic is too expensive. Not fair because all the old stuff seems to be there. Also, Is there a narrow block and a wide block. I am told a narrow block suits a 2 spd and wide block suits a 3 spd.

Hello
What is the drama with the 144 engine? As you said its for your daughter who is just getting her licence. Why dont you just fit up the BW35 three speed and just reco the 144 with a head set up for unleaded. How fast does she need it to be really? As you also mentioned she will appreciate the fuel economy. When shes off her Ps then would be the time to look at a hotter motor. I hate to say it but will she appreciate a 50 year old as much as you after shes driven it for a couple of years? Corey |

The issue is I want to recondition the cylinder head for unleaded so she doesnt have to muck around with additives etc.... Dont want to spend time and money doing up a 144 when I could do it to a 170 or 200. 2nd thing is to use a 3 spd, I need a wide block motor. The 144/2spd I currently have is a narrow block and the 3 spd wont fit. So, I need to find a 170 narrow block and use the 2 spd auto or a wide block 170 or 200 and use a 3 spd auto. Or just do up the 144 and be happy with an under powered but economical car. Who knows, maybe that's what I'll end up doing. At least I understand the options now.

another problem that you might have is changing transmissions...
Many years ago I had an XR fairmont with the 200 super pursuit motor with the Fordomatic trans. After blowing up a couple of those, a mate offered me a BW35 for $50 that had been reco'd 12 months before..... So I put the new trans on the motor and the mouting point was about 25mm out so got some 5mm plate drilled a couple holes for the trans mount and welded it to the original crossmember. Next was the tailshaft.... The BW35 has a different yoke to the Fordomatic and the shaft was too long. So got it shortened and an XB yoke welded onto it.... Never had a problem after that.... This will give you an idea what you are in for.. its not just a simple swap...

Mate, I would be hunting around for a complete XA or XB, with a 200 or 250 and auto. That will give you all the mechanicals you need, plus front brakes and a few other bits and pieces. If you can find a rusty one, even better. Shouldnt be too dear for an old s**t box parts car.

Yes I was aware of the crossmember mod needed and tailshaft as well. I can do that stuff easily but kind of trying not to spoil an original car too much if I can help it. My best option will be to find a narrow block 170 and use the 2 spd auto but as they seem to be rare, I'll have to consider my other options. I drove the car with the 144 and 2 spd, not real impressive. Like I said, I have a good understanding of what the options are now so I wont be buying stuff that's no good to me.

Cool no probs, at least you know what is involved.....
Had an argument once in front of a customer with the works "Mechanic" over this very issue once..... He was not a happy bunny after the customer wouldnt listen to him anymore..... Much to say I wasnt there long after that, cos aparantly I was unsuitable for that kinda work..... It was just working at a wreckers pulling parts of cars, how simple was that..... Funny how all the car yards I had worked in prior to that had never had an issue.....
