New sump and gasket for AU1 XR6 VCT? :(

On a side note, do you know if these can be changed without lifting the engine?

The sump is still available and costs $500.00 retail, I will check as to how much I could save you and, the gasket is $147.00.

As far as I know, you COULD get away with it but I think you would have to take the front cross member off to do so. Either way you go, it will be a job that will require some hours to complete. :(

is it a aluminium sump,i read steel sump.if its a aluminium sump you can try a heli coil insert amd save the sump change.i have to make a new bung for the ltd sump before it strips out,the xr8 ones great.just thinking if its a steel sump you can machine a bung and braze-silver solder it in and re fit the sump,be better than a new one-as you will have more threads in it.

au is a cast aluminium sump.. i would be tapping an oversise thread and using an oversized sump plug.. much cheaper than a new sump..

Thats what I'm going to try tomorrow Troyman. I think I'll need a 13mm or 14mm bolt though, its already been drilled and helicoiled, the insert is ripped out though. I'll see what I can find.

I knew it would be expensive but WOW!

Thanks guys, appreciate it.

I have no idea what I'm doing. I have been told that if I get an oversize plug, it should tap its way in. Its been tapped for a helicoil though, so I'm not sure how that will affect it.

heli coil is tapped larger to allow the insert to screw in to it and have the right screw thread inside it,you have to go bigger and remove that thread, and re tap for a fine thread and bolt, how thick is the casting.this determines how many threads you can get.can try a new heli coil the same size and loctite it in.use the same thread as the plug is now.have a good look and see which way to go.

I know how a helicoil works. I am wondering if, for example, all M12 X1.5 Helicoils would use the same thread pitch. If so, a new helicoil of the same type should be able to go straight in.

The other main thing worrying me is that there isn't alot of room to work with. The AU has the drain bolt on the side of the sump, and there is only about maybe 100mm of room to work with. Thats not enough room to get a drill in, and I'm not sure if thats enough room to get any sort of tap or helicoil installing tool in. Thats why I'm hoping to try an oversized bolt, just afraid if that doesn't work that may make it worse.

My other option I know is to get a mobile thread guy out, but I'm not sure how much cash they would want, and what they could do with it.

can tap it,drill has to be a 90 deg.drill, helicoil install tool can be shortened,at worst undo the engine mount and lift it a bit,you will work something out-it can be done.

Apparently the AU 6's (at least) have a helicoil type insert from factory, and they often come out. Thats what the thread guy rekcons, hes coming tomorrow arvo to fix it.

Thanks for the advice everybody!

Glad you will get it fixed, never knew that about Sumps though but, I guess it makes sense having a steel helicoil into a alloy sump.
