here is a picture of some springs, notice how the coil is tighter and tapered at each end so they can seat themselves properly. if you cut them half a turn down how will you get them to sit in properly and not shift/fall out when the shock hits full extension and there is less pressure on the spring? P.S how do you get the photo to appear in the post

{USERNAME} wrote: Very true. But how many guys who cut springs are going to run shorter stroke shocks so the spring can't fall out? Why would they spend up on shocks to suit their cheapo chopped springs? Yes, correct. I was just making the point due to a lot of "your springs will fall out" like it is some inherent problem of cutting your springs and not having shorter springs in general.

P.S how do you get the photo to appear in the post I have only seen it done once and was one full coil and done to mimick the taper. When the shock hits full extension your spring shouldn't have so little tension that it can move at all, regardless of whether it is a manufactured spring with a taper or a cut standard spring. Even if your shortened spring stays seated due to the taper if it isn't under tension at full extension you need shorter shocks.

I had cut springs before in my ef, it's very bouncy ,as said before when u cut a spring the bottom isn't flat so it can't sit properly and therefore bounces around , if u went over a bump and the body lifted high enough it could pop out, so i got ssl all round which made it alot better.
then when I got my xr6 it had sl all round but some one cut the back so they were about ssl height, so I put ssl in the rear out of the ef,. So now in the xr6 I have sl front and ssl in the rear with stock shocks that are gt Monroe but are stock height , even then the ride is still s**t, 19"'s don't help, but soon I'm going to put in shortened shocks , not sure which brand yet, might got KYB, Any ideas ? Btw if Ur interested I have front ssl and rear sl if u want them only problem is the sl are cut , but ironic lol

One drunken weekend I cut 3 coils out of each corner of my old zl, rode like poo but looked the shiz. Springs were still captive at full extension as well. I don't recommend doing this to anybody but.

I paid $60 for a set of barely used superlow rears off ebay and $80 for low fronts. They are cheap and easy to get. Why bother chopping for?

What a knob-jockey. I ran sl in the rear of mine for about 4 months until i could afford to do the rest of the suspension and it was quite rough due to the shocks being too long for the shorter springs. When i chucked the short shocks in it was like chalk and cheese. The ride was incredible compared to bouncing around everywhere. Short shocks are highly recommended for sl and shorter springs

stock shocks will be fine with superlows, it won't be the best ride in the world, and it'll likely get worse.
some people won't care, some will.

I had cut springs in my EB & as mentioned before, every time the car got jacked up the springs would fall out, I bit the bullet & got custom set rear springs from Kmac for $125.
Best $125 I ever spent as the car is at the same height as was the cut springs & the rear is solid now. {DESCRIPTION}

{USERNAME} wrote: Yep very dangerous, my mate chopped his vr rears and I told him wat the outcome would be, he didnt listen and 1 week later he called me to come help him pull his car off a tree as a spring fell out and he spun out, wasnt going fast either I call s**t. Cut springs should be fine,I've had a few cars with cut springs and drove alot with them and its realy not that big of a deal. Just dont go over the top and cut 3 or 4 coils off. But you can get SL and SSL pritty cheap these days so i wouldnt even bother stuffing around cutting them when they can be found for under $100. If you do go lower then SL make sure you do get short shocks or it will ride like crap weather you cut them or put SSL's in.
