Hey everyone........were all the T5s the same from EA onwards? Like did the EA ones have more dramas then the EB one or were they the same thing. Was looking into doing a manual conversion and seeing people selling them for cheap i might get them early. EA T5s seem to go cheaper is that because they have clocked more kms on them?

eb upwards the same ea had a shorter first gear and flywheels was only secured by 3 bolts, were a little bit weaker

EA to EB1 boxes are cheaper because the are plentiful and less desirable. Not to say they are bad though.
They have a shorter first gear which can be a pain if you have a 3.45 diff (you only get about 40km if that out of it - nice launch tho), have no syncro on reverse and are generally weaker than later boxes. They also run a 3 bolt clutch which isnt as strong as the later 6 bolt clutches. EB2 and up have the same ratios (a little better suited to the 4l engine and diff combo), are generally stronger with progressively better synros in the later models of the box. They also use a stronger 6 bolt clutch. Only downfall is that they are pretty hard to source considering they were only available in Gli's, Futuras, XR's, Ute's and Vans. And even then they only made up a small percentage of those models. You can use a 6 bolt clutch with an EA box as long as you have the proper 6 bolt flywheel. |

you can also tap and dowel the EA flywheel to to make it an eb-> flyhweel.

I'm not totally convinced the EA box is weaker than the std later versions - case/gear hardening aside of course (e.g. T5Z), I've got both std types stripped down currently, replacing bearings, etc. The other change internally besides the reverse inhibitor spring is the later versions run a tapered bearing between the input and output shafts, instead of the earlier parallel rollers.
Surprisingly, a few of the gears are interchangeable, I haven't inspected everything as yet, but I can put something together if anyone wants it - otherwise, new parts will cost a fortune. Externally the quickest way to tell an EA/EBI box from later versions is to look for a 'roofing nail' type head that sits below to the rear of the reverse switch (Gearcase LHS). This is absent on the earlier boxes - it's the spring anchor for the later reverse inhibitor spring. I've found in a lot of cases, the box that is claimed to come out of a certain car is not the original, so the above is handy to remember.

The EA box is weaker because of the difference in ratios between 1st and 2nd. On a hard shift the bigger difference in ratios puts more of a torque strain on the box. Ive also been told by the local gearbox shop that the 5th gear mechanism on the EA's is weak and often one of the pins breaks. They replace theirs with EL pins which are stronger (I dont know what pin they are referring to).

can anyone tell me off hand what sort of speed i would get out of first gear using an EA T5 and a 3.73:1 diff??
would this be a similar combination to an EF T5 and 3.9's?

would this be a similar combination to an EF T5 and 3.9's? Not much I wouldnt think... EA T5 with a 3.45 diff gets you about 40km/h I believe. Nice ballsy jump off the line though. |

Thanks for the info - it actually explains 'why', where a lot of other threads don't.
{USERNAME} wrote: The EA box is weaker because of the difference in ratios between 1st and 2nd. On a hard shift the bigger difference in ratios puts more of a torque strain on the box. 1.36 gap compared to 1.26, not a huge diff, but when torque is multiplied, different story I guess. Might also be a reason why the input/output shaft joining bearing type was changed. Countergears are nearly identical - the earlier type has an extra tooth on the input shaft mesh gear.{USERNAME} wrote: Ive also been told by the local gearbox shop that the 5th gear mechanism on the EA's is weak and often one of the pins breaks. This will most likely be the 5th/reverse shift rod/rail - there is a pin halfway along - good you mentioned this, the one for my later g/box has cracks around the peening, I'd say in time those bits will break away - the pin could then fall out. The only other pins are roll pins, I doubt it would be them.{USERNAME} wrote: Hey snap, Do you know how Xf T5's compare to the Ea's? Well going off previous threads on here - they are the same.

is there anyway i can figure it out?
Reason being Im basically getting a manual conversion from an EA for nothing, all i have to get is an EF ECU, pedal box, and im getting a new HD clutch for it. I dont want to turn this offer down ![]()
