I'll start by saying I don't know much about automatics.

The BA Workshop Manual, however, mentions that it drives the transmission solenoids from the PCM following instructions from the hall-effect transistors mounted in the Gear Lever Assembly for the Tip + and Tip - selectors.

The question follows then, can I jumper these connectors to two buttons on the steering wheel that would let me select up or down gears while keeping both hands on the wheel (gear Level would have to be pushed to the left into Perf mode of course) - or does the lever participate in some manner with the hydraulics when Manually selecting gears?

I'm only asking Re: the 4 speeds obviously, as the missus has an SX Terri....

I'd be curious if anyone knows one way or the other.

I wouldnt think it would be hard to do, as when you move it across to Perf mode, it doesnt move the selector attached to the gear box (im pretty sure it wouldnt). so as you say it may just be a case of adding jumper connecters to it.

What for though? My dad's VZ Calais has a 5 speed semi auto with the changes on the wheel and it's damn annoying to use.. you forget which is which if you have a bit of lock on. The Ford system is much better.

Yes, I've heard other people with the same opinion.

Let's just call it an intellectual excercise for the moment.

I looked into it further, and the shift mechanism is separate like you say, but is connected with a cable to the transmission. So when in tiptronic, does this cable get used at all, or is that only used when moving on PRND?

The cable does not move when in Tiptronic mode.

Can the + and - be reversed???
IE push FWD to change up and Pull Back to change down.

I HATE the way it is now, its backwards.

why ? it is backwards to all the tohers for a reason it is a better system

pull back to change up as the car accelerates u are not working against the accelerational Forces

Hmm. This doesn't look easy.

The TRS-A2 sensor has only 3 pins - a GND and Vref in (which I think is 5V) and a signal out.

The manual is a little vague on which pins are 1, 2 and 3, but there are meant to be specific Voltages set between pins 2 and 3 depending on if the system is in auto, manual, tip + or tip -.

It's almost impossible to simulate these voltages on the pin using external circuitry while the internal circuit is also in operation. I won't say it's completely impossible, but would take a bit of figuring out. It doesn;t help any that the TRS-A2 circuit diagram appears incomplete.

If anyone has a complete circuit diagram of the TRS-A2 sensor then we might be able to figure out a way to provide external tiptronic settings.

I'd have to say that at this point it looks unlikely that we'd be able to reverse the direction of the tiptronic unit without opening up TRS-A2 and swapping a couple of resistors.

Pinout
1 and 2 - all positions -> 4.8V to 5.2V
2 and 3 - Auto -> 3.7V to 4.2V
2 and 3 - Manual -> 2.6V to 3.3V
2 and 3 - Tip + -> 1.5V to 2.0V
2 and 3 - Tip - -> 0.5V to 1.3V

cheers lukeyson....

I have been drag racing for quite a while and pushing fwd on pretty much all hiperf shifters changes up, my subaru, honda, bmw all pushed fwd if I remember correctly to change up, this was the first car I owned that was pull back to change up.
Im making a d**k of my self when i drive it in manual mode as when i go to change gear without thinking I go the wrong way... hehehehe

oh and PS, there are no acceleration forces in my BA falcon. (compared to what I have been driving)

I just bought a selector with the TRS-A2 in it. So I'll pull it out and have a good look at it to see what can be done. (The kids will love the new gear handle on teh cubby house!)

However, it will have to queue up with the other stuff I'm doing:

(1) Sedan Rear Map Reading lights - split into two globes, so that the Courtesy Light comes on Blue, but the Map Read light comes on white.
(2) Swap up to BF Fairlane leather interior (requires harness and impact sensor changes for side airbags to work). 8-way drivers memory, 6-way power passenger seat and memory mirros. Woohoo! What a job!
(3) verify ability to enable cruise control, set wheel diameter/axle ratio etc on PCM (I'm pretty close now).

And now

(4) Try to make an auto gear selector swap direction, or add whell-mounted tiptropnic buttons.

I know the new Mazda RX8 have the paddle shift setup, maybe check their wiring as well?

There's a little bar magnet on the shaft, when you flick to PERF the magnet sits over a circuitboard. My electric windows switchboard, plus my BA shifter circuitboard wiring died in my EB due to lack of heat shielding (driving with the windows down would suck hot air from the cats/trans up through the gaps under my centre console). I've heat-shielded everything effectively now so no hot air gets sucked up anymore but I digress...

Anyway when my circuitboard with the 3 sensors died on it, I bought a replacement BA shifter from a wreckers, pulled the circuit off that, slotted it in place of the original circuit on my modified BA shifter housing, and volia, it worked fine again.

I'd say that you could simply stick the circuit in back to front to get upshifts & downshifts reversed, assuming the wiring coming from the a***-end of the circuit won't foul on anything on top of the housing...

It's worth a shot, and if it doesn't work, just stick it back in the right way again.

If you swapped the 4k7 and 1k resistors around you would achieve a reversed direction shifter.
