Why would an AU block be shorter than E series 3.9/4.0 block ?????

The t5 from a au wont fit a e series the holes in the floor wont line up with the shifter?

E series blocks and AU blockes are the same length. AU T5 is about 2" longer so the manual tailshaft is shorter. AU auto tailshaft is usable in E series.

i recall reading somewhere on here that they aren't rated for as higher speeds as the steel units though... if thats your thing, which obviously it shouldn't be on public roads.

ive been lead to believe the lighter ones are the better ones as you can remove the speed limiter and if your on the dyno or on a race track you can do it without the driveshaft coming off and destroying everything in its path

Wrong way round, the steel ones aren't great at high speeds hence the 180kmp/h limiter where as the alloy tail shaft is better and lighter for higher speeds[/quote]

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that the "balancer" on the tailshaft is actually just a dampener for the vehicles which came out of the factory with the most acceptable backlash in the diff??

My diff has a nit of back lash but the tail shaft mafr no difference on that lol diff probably stuffed in my car though, 340 thousand kms on it :)

EFI XRs/Fairmont Ghias didn't have them from what I was told.

all lwb have them,the steel is stock and 180\190 rated---cut out,alloy over 200 to cut out in xrs,some did as stock.but with a old car it may have been swapped out for a steel one when changing unis.the alloy was 1k,i paid $300 to have a uni changed,and they sh*t themselves in case they bent or broke it.

That isn't quite right.....EA & EB1 never had the Harmonic balancer on the tailshafts.....although, they did have the rubber mounted weight hanging under the rear of the extension housing.
I thought the EB2 XR6 had a steel tailshaft, as did the EB1 XR8.


not quite right, my ea ghia had one on the tail shaft, it has long gone when the tail shaft was replaced.

so whats the deal with these?
i've got an AU2 which was converted to manual. (no driveline noise with the auto) and now i have a nice backlash noise and vibrations and other strange rattling noises whilst in low gears (3rd, 4th, 5th) but only under acceleration or deceleration.
i've got one of these dampners off a wagon alloy tailshaft, is it fine to just press it off and have it pressed onto mine?
from what i've read this sounds like it'll help my issue? anyone?

well i noticed when i put my driveshaft on without the weight it got a vibration when my car was in 4th gear at low rpm(auto) but if it is reving harder theres no problem, so ive been thinking about putting the other back on, or getting an au tailshaft for it as they are alloy
