I'm sure everyone is familiar with that classic Falcon tranny noise.. (AKA "The Taxi sound")
Taking off in first gear, the Auto tranny on all XF series (and perhaps earlier with a BorgWarner) onwards, (and even some early BA taxi's are doing it now..) makes an awful whining worn out noise. My Question is, can it be quenched, or stopped completely? (Even re-co tranny's seem to make the noise) Is it a design flaw? I'm also curious to see if the 6 speed ZF in the new BF falc does the same thing.... And for those smart-alecs out there, NO swapping to a T5 is NOT an acceptable solution!

dont swap it to a T5 then,
get a louder exhaust!! 
I know the noise that you are talking about. every taxi i have bneen in makes it. mine makes it, and i have just had the tranny serviced. I think that it is just the noise that they make. But only in first with no real load on the car can i hear it, other than that, zorst is too loud!! |

If the exhaust dosent work, Upgrade the stereo!!!
I dont think anyone that I have spoken to has been able to get rid of that noise. If you wanted to be really flash, you could try padding around the tranny tunnel to take a bit of the noise. Other than that, You got me beat! |

in an post a while ago a member said it was the brass shaving from the radiator that have accumulated in the back of the tranny and make the whinning sound whether this is the case i don't know.
but the noise annoys the hell outa me.

ive had 4 transmissions in my car (3 secondhand ones - 1 original) the first 3 whined in first gear, but this latest one (which is very old and tired) doesnt, i think its just a combination of a LOT of factors

Its interesting that your old and shagged one doesnt make the noise.
but no doubt if your are on tranny #4 then all of them were a bit shagged!! |

A function of the tooth size on the gears. Big chunky teeth = noise.
Some BA models have smaller teeth and are much quieter.

I know the noise and have been told its normal, my old fairlane i could hear it pretty well..
I cant hear it now, all i hear is exhaust unless listening for it, but still doesnt seem nearly as much as the old 'lane had. Go figure.

yeh, pretty sure its just factory whine, doesnt annoy me too much....
if anyone asks when they are in the car see how gullable they are and say its a floor mount supercharger

Ive had that 'taxi' whine in my EF for a couple months now.
But with some elimination, ive assumed its not the tranny, as evary gear from 1st to D and even neutral it still happens. So if theres no load on the drivetrain whilst coasting, it must be the diff. or maybe the pinion from the driveshaft. Im going to replace the diff oil and see if it makes any difference, but im afraid its gonna be a HELL of a lot more than that--rebuild, new diff
