Guys.

What can go wrong with a 4 speed auto that it "Creeps forward in Neutral"?

I sold my Auto on ebay, and the buyer is complaining about it doing this, as well as slipping in forward and not working in reverse.

His old gearbox wasnt working in reverse either.... so I have real doubts.

The gearbox was working faultlessly when I pulled it out 2 weeks ago.

Can the auto creep forward in neutral if anything goes wrong? - or is it down to bad installation (Pro advice needed). Hes claimed to have had it checked and been told its stuffed.

Thanks

Nigel

Could his shifter adjustment be off?
When in reverse its actually in nuetral and when in nueatral its actually in drive maybe???

That was my figuring... but I need someone technical to confirm for me that it cant happen any other way.

My suspicion is that he screwed up putting the torque converter in properly.... when he changed the bellhousing.

I guess it possible this could be the cause. That just about exceeds my knowledge of auto's. :)

Andrew.

I hope you put identifying marks on the box you sold Nigel, the buyer may be trying to pull a swifty on you.
A low life tried that on me 30 years ago [he failed] so it's not a new con.
As you're sure it was working fine, stick to your guns, it was probably screwed up by not re-setting the linkages as per the workshop manual.
This effectively keeps the auto in drive [ie not fully in neutral] and prevents it from going into reverse.
One way of checking it is to separate the selector arm at the gearbox linkage and manually [under the car] click it into neutral [or reverse] and see what happens and where the linkage arm lines up etc.
Another problem could be the absence or excess wear on the selector arm bushes, especially right at the box end where the linkages meet.
A rod bent while removing the engine/gearbox could cause trouble too.
BenJ had a total absence of these bushes and wondered why his selections where sloppy, I wondered how they worked at all!! LOL LOL.
Cheers,
Mac

Thanks. Cool thing about this one : The guy who bought it has en EF, and the gearbox has an earlier date code. also different mountings to the bellhousing. So he cant just swap it on me.

Its definetly his error, and that leaves me feeling ok. Im actually wondering if he has it set up so that (Park) = Neutral, which would leave reverse and neutral as forward.

Cheers

if he had a problem with reverse and is still having the same problem, it may be that his ECU is playing up..
