You would probably get away with the slight differences inside the valvebody of the transmission, but the rear mounting position of the six is different to the V8. And you can't simply swap ext. housings as the v8 and 6 have different output shafts. They could be the same length (I am positive there not) but the speedo is in a different position. Also if you are using a ED transmission make sure the bell housing mates up to the box properly. EA has 4 bolts holding the housing to the box and later ones have 9, on the 6's if you put a 4 bolt housing on a 9 bolt box and do them up with a Impact gun you will most likely crack the main case causing major oil leaks, so I suppose the 8's will have the same problems. This can be fixed with a few mods. (grinding). You may have to check front pumps (or convertors)on both boxes as there are different pumps and convertor neck lengths between the EA/B and some later boxes (I think you will find a ED trans. has a different thickness set of pump gears so there is a different convetor to suit it)

I don't think you can swap it for a 6cyl one. They are a different model designation.
