So for a while the 3rd gear synchro in my car has been crunching if i move it too swiftly.

today it stopped going into 3rd entirely. :( and when it did finally go in i couldnt get it out! yay for 4L engines being able to pull up a steep hill in 3rd! ha ha.

i have spoken to a mate of mine who used to work on the brute utes a few years ago and is an old hand at rebuilding t5s between races, and we are going to rebuild this one ourselves.

So i am on the hunt for a new synchro, does anyone know where i can find them and roughly how much they cost?

Supposedly the box was rebuilt before i bought it (i've only had it in the car for 6000km) and is nice and tight except that synchro, so i'm guessing they just did bearings.

any advice on special tools we'll need for the job? i will get a new bearing puller (dad sold our old one for $10) and some circlip pliers (dad sold our old ones for $5  ) and we know someone with a press.

any other things i should be looking out for?

Cheers,
Nic

what about using a synchro out of a AU or BA T5 (if it fits) then it shouln't be a drama to get it from ford.

i am no rebuilt speiclist but i am sure it shouldn't be a drama if you or your mate has a full toolbox.

Later boxes should fit - but you can use EA synchros if needed. IIRC 3rd and 4th synchros are same, but 1st and 2nd are different due to the 3 piece synchro setup.
I'm wondering if it is a synchro issue - probably for engagement, but for holding in it could be the sliding hub or the keys held in by the circular springs, but if that was the case, 4th would feel not good either - hence the question.
Only way you'll know is to strip it down.

hrmmm... yeah, the way its only the one gear is what makes me think its a synchro. We will be stripping it down in the new year when we are all back in townsville with the tool boxes! will find out for sure then.

and yeah so all the falcon t5 synchros should be able to fit up as long as its for 3rd/4th gear? cool

thanks guys
