balljoints, the au was making fairly loud noises when the left bottom one was shagged.

Ahh right.. If you haven't had the front bushes done then I'd have a guess that it's the bushes in the pic...

My mate's ED made clunking sounds under brakes into corners and it ended up being those bushes. It's normally the inner one that you can't check until you pull it out..

I also get little knocks and the occasional louder knock, would worn bushes also transfer Engine and road vibration at say 80KMH do you think?
I get that too. It also looks like it'd cost an arm and a leg to get all the bushes done by someone, would I be correct in that assumption?

the breakdown looks like its from the ford repair manaul, 3 volume set $200+.

worn bushes will transfer more vibration and noise.
and they will cost a bit to get done, as in bend over please a bit.

Yeah I think we might be onto something there. It's a warm day here in perth, and driving around this morning, the front end feels a bit lose, not a whole lot lose, but a bit, the front end knocks when I stress it out with sudden braking, it knocks when reversing and pulling in, and the front shockers are creaking as the car sways back and forth.

I got a quote today, $500 to do shocks, and all the bushes.

As 'msman' said straight out of the Bible..

And yes it cost me $230 for the 3 volumes but i've saved 10 times that already doing everything on my car myself (mainly cause I don't trust any one else doin' s**t to my car).

sounds like flogged out bushes more than likely in the upper control arms. the pic you have there only shows the lower. on the top you have the A arm upper, there this mounts to the car there are 2 bolts, one for each arm of the A, inside there are a set of rubber in each, these are originally pressed in and have a metal rod through the guts that the bolt threads through, the bush surrounds the rod and is pressed into the arm itself, the rubber flogs out and the metal rod then slaps the metal of the A arm and you get a big loud clunk. yeah its pretty loud, almost to the point it sounds like the car is bottoming out. check that one first cause a ball joint is gonna set you back about $200-$300 reco or new, found that one out recently. found the bushes out with my old XR.

to check it, Jack your car up, take off the wheel, nice and high so you can get your head in there, chassis stands would be advisable here, grab the top A arm and it should not have any lateral movement. if there is shesa stuffed. if there is not, then while you have the wheel off get a good hold of the upright, and hope and pray that there is no movement in the Ball joints..

Mine does this too, there is no detectable play with it all in the air and everything seems torqued to F.T. specs.


First time it did it, i s**t myself thinking I just smashed into something, its that loud and the knock is felt throughout the chassis. Now I'm getting used to it doing it if I need to brake heavily in reverse and to expect it the first time heavy braking is done forwards. Doesn't do it again until you've heavily braked (read: locked up) in reverse.

Ball joints and most of the bushes are very easy to do especially the ones shown in the pic, have done them on my car and am doing my wifes EA tomorrow if the weather isn't too hot.

I've just replaced a few bush's in the front end of my ford, all lower arm bushes, and i didn't put enough grease between the faces and the subframe / shocker mounts, and man they squeak like a bloddy EH holden that's never had the front end done. I bought nolethanes. This comming w/e i'll get under there again and fix that....

I also need to replace the radius rod to sub frame bushes shortly. I get a loud bang/clunk noise when reversing and stopping reasonably hard or going forwards and stopping fairly hard. Suspension joint said that was due to radius rod to sub frame bushes. 255k kms old, and i would say they are the originals, the lower arm's bushes were original ford items. Probably from 1993. #4 on that exploded pic, with the arrows. I was thinking i couldn't do them myself, but looking at that exploded view, as long as i can get a swing with a hammer i reckon i could do them myself. Won't be easy tho.

Say punch the pin thru towards the back, leaver the front of the bush out, then smack the rear of it out, stick the rear of the new bush onto the radius rod, stick the rod thru the hole, fit the front of the bush, fit nut and washer and tighten until it's pressed back in. Definatly not easy but possible. I don't know if i'll run rubber or nolethane in the radius rod to sub frame tho.

If you get a bit of a rattle when going over bumps, esp when cornoring, check the sway bar D bushes, mine are RS and the bar rattles a bit on good bumps.

For the radius rod bushes, replace 1 radius rod, lower arm bushes, sway bar D bushes, steering rack & switch, front & rear shocks, rear upper and iirc rear lower bushes pedders quoted me $2k to do all the work. Parts bill from burson's is about $1200 when i got quotes so i can do it all myself. I'm doing it myself in stages.
