Ok, im posting on behalf of my bro, hes got a V6 97 explorer XLT..

it has recently developed a rattle i think, and it appears to be the front timing chain, a guy from ford said it was just the front one, apparantly the rears were ok. Now, the quote he got from ford was $2500 to get it fixed. Does this seem too high for the work? could always try get a wrecked explorer with a v8 and see how much that would leave him down after selling the other 1 for parts.. but the main issue, does $2500 seem right for replacing the front timing chain?

hmm not sure about that price

this is just a rough guess my mum has a 2000 V6 camry and they got both timing belts changed (one on the front and rear of engine) for 800 bucks. thats just a rough guide

Ask Vibrate as he has an Explorer and he recently told us about the joys of his timing chain I think...

Timing chain for the Explorer is $3000 (said by vibrate) so i am thinking $2500 is a good price!

fix the other one at the same time because the engine has to be removed to do it.. ie the 2nd one wont cost another $2500.. and than sell it coz exploders are probably one of the worst (among taurus and mondeo) fords ever built both in reliability and in parts pricing...

another piece of trivia, the new V6 couriers are built in south africa by ford not by mazda, and the V6 motor/gearbox/drivetrain are all fresh out of an exploder

Best thing to do is sell the Exploder before it blows up.
