Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I have an AUII and was wondering if I can pick up digital radio...

Is it a matter of a new aerial? Headunit? Etc... Or is it much more complicated than that?

You'll definatley be needing a new headunit, however I'm unaware of a company that currently makes a Digital radio compatible headunit, the stock Ford unit will only recieve anolouge radio.

There aren't many car stereos that are DAB compatible.

You can wither run a portable unit, interfaced with a stereo of you have the JVC KD-DB56 and the Crystal EDB410BT, which are the only 2 DAB+ car radios that I know of

EDIT: MEA is a winner!

Actually Kenwood make a DAB+ head unit. $399 @ JB Hifi.

Here

Worth a look, sounds like the exact thing you are after, if you intend on changing your head unit.

I wasn't planning on changing my headunit, only got it a few months ago. But the idea of digital radio is very tempting... I wanted to get a really good head unit and build up from there but the au head units are in a bit of an awkward spot considering the gear shifter. So trying to see what I can get single or double fun that wont be impractical or annoying...
But thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

This might be more what you are after then, from my understanding, these are a digital radio receiver that then sends the broadcast via a preselected FM band to your existing headunit. Much like an FM adapter for your Ipod.

yeah it is, but if you don't want to change head units, this is pretty much the only option.

unless it has a line out, and you can put it to an aux in port, you will loose a small amount of audio quality, but really, you would be hard pressed to make the distinction, especially, with a new deck and good speakers.

At the moment, it is not really "downgrading" per se. It depends on the bit rate of the particular channel you are listening to, but most of the DAB channels are not high quality but you can argue most people listening to mp3s dont know the difference anyway. Only ABC classical is relatively high last time I checked at around 96kbps as classical music listeners are more discerning but even 96kbps is not that great but ok AAC encoding. That, and DAB doesn't get transmitted out far beyond metro areas at the moment so if you travel a bit you'll find you'll be going back to your FM or MP3s often. It's definitely cool to have all those channels though.

the fg has a digital radio. cant say i notice much difference. doesnt get as much static in the country, but still drops out. displays names of the songs and radio station on the screen with the name of the dj and or show. really not that great a change up that i got all excited about it when i went from the ba to the fg.

I just got an fg 09" and mine displayed 'triple J' for a while, but doesn't do it anymore... And as far as I can tell it doesn't pick up digital stations eg triple j unearthed :(
