can any one simply tell me if a standard el ecu can be retrained to xr6 , or are the maps etc very different ? before i invest in e.g. j3 chip

There is bugger all difference between the 2 ecu's XR ecu's had a firmer shift pattern, that was all, the rest was engine bay hardware, ie, head, fuel reg and stuff. A shift kit will firm up your shifts as well.

just get a shift kit ,

and invest the ECU money into a nice set of pacemakers
