Could have been a regulator fault,driver fault by running the fuel pump low for long periods or pump wiring at fault.

I think what actualy happened was that when I replaced the pump (yes, this one was brand new) I used a standard hose clip on the pipe. I think the + lead shorted against the camp, causing this.

looks like you had a fire in the fuel tank...
Have you tried resetting your ECU? What about using a higher octane fuel? Its harder to burn. And if you wanna fix it properly, have a look at Bush Mechanics... it describes exaclty how to operate a fuel pump... (manually lol). Cheers
