Grey isn't hard to do, the clear finish will fill any sanding marks - provided they're light. Cappa should be similar. IMO the gloss finish looks better than the original.
I redid my EL 4 switch setup - all markings (except the lock switch) were all nearly worn off. Apply your letters after light sanding, 6 or so light coats of el cheapo Export clear, let them dry properly (overnight as Mark mentions), assemble your switches. You'll need white Letraset L79 3.5mm Helvetica & white Letraset L154 2.5mm Helvetica. I couldn't get them from Sydney or anywhere nearby, so I ordered them through Jacksons (www.jacksons.com.au) as well.
