As the title states. Is it because the wheel itself is a "seconds" wheel, cos the tyre is a "blem" or is it simply because the spar is not the same as the original alloy wheels?

most likely the spare tyre is a 215/55/16. used in the utes and wagons i believe. ba mk2 sedans come with 215/60/16 spare don't know about the others.
your normal tyres are 215/60/16.

Thought that may have been the case. The car is an XR turbo so it had the 17" alloys on it (now has 19s on

Bridgestone here (The only tyre shop in town) can't deal with 19" tyres; they can only fit up to 18s

Won't be putting them on the rear Blackjack. Unfortunately due to the d***head in Commodores around here, having stockies on the back is an instant defect here at the moment.
