In that car a 289.. You could use the 302 crank and 289 rods tho...

Whichever is easier/cheaper to get your hands on. Externally they are identical to look at sizewise to fitment is the same.

![]() go find an AU XR8 engine. loose the ef.i put a performer airgap intake on it with 1850 600vac and run regular dizzy. any cheap 289 is going to need a rebuild anyway so the cost would be pretty close, but you get a roller cam with the AU engine and half good set of heads. |

![]() no need to yell dude. ![]() just saying for the cost the later engine is far better option. smooth, reliable, more power and will still idle like a stocker if you want it to. but a cam swap is all thats needed you want a camy idle and bit more grunt |

![]() spark plug angle may be a problem. but as far as intake manifold, dizzy, engine mounts blah blah blah, it's still a windsor, once you take the EFI stuff off it's pretty much the same. Aside from the roller cam and better heads |

Only issue with roller block is EPA is supposed to be tha same and there's nothing wrong with that..
Some GT"P" heads would be cheap performance heads.. Depends on your budget ?? Keep in mind these engines rev, so fit good valve springs... My old 289 had ported 289 heads Weind inlet and the smallest 4 barrel Holley 450 CFM to have untold throttle responce.. It in a mk 1 Escort that I rallycrossed in N.Z...

Leave the EFI on it if you're going with a 5.0 and put EFI on it of you use a 289/302.
302 blocks are a better starting point because the bottom edge of the cylinder walls extend a bit lower into the crankcase than 289 blocks. This gives better support for your pistons as they travel through BDC. |

Actually with all the H.O stuff being replaced ??
I think an old 289/ 302 with H.O efi would go quite well and economical... The 289 has longer rods though Pete ?? Either way it doesn't matter... 302 with longer rods but then things start to get expensive..I think ACL have 302 pistons with pin height for longer rods ? Check ebay, trading post, parts peddler etc ??

if you get a late model EFI they have one piece seals too....which is a bonus

Yeah 289 has 5.15" rods instead of 302s' 5.09" but pistons are available off the shelf to suit 289 rods on a 3" stroke crank. Boss 302 used the 289 length rod too so you could use pistons for one of them if you didn't care about the valve relief posi.
Good point Fairy, late engines use a better one piece rear main seal. Although a 2 piece rubber lip seal works pretty good when installed correctly. |
