I have a question regarding older 302s. Would the block out of an XT Falcon suit my application? Are they very different to todays 302 blocks?

EL XR8... the avatar kinda gives it away.
Would it be possible to use one of these blocks as a base for a new short motor for my car (or efi windsor based project), or would it not be compatible for some reason?

You can but DON'T tell the RTA or EPA..
The issue is getting around the roller cam.. Yes flat tappet will work.. Bta aftermarket cam followers and roller cam is one option.. The other is a small base circle cam and std roller lifters... which to a point is going backwards.. Crane etc have cam kits that convert to flat tappet motors.. The earlier 302 is stronger by atleast 100 h.p..

the old 302 block are the way to go if your on a budget, just make sure it hasent been bored 2 much. Good base if you want to make 500hp reliably if your on a budget.

EBXR8360 - can you go into a bit more detail please? I'm not too sure what you are talking about. Is it only an issue with the cam style then? Is it a costly exercise getting around this problem?
I had someone mention to me that there could be a difference in timing covers. Is this the case? I'm going to find out how much it's been bored, if any tomorrow. Would it be worth getting if it has been bored already? If so, how much can it have been done?

Early blocks have shorter lifter bores because they don't need to accomodate the taller roller lifters.
You can either use a small base circle cam so that the stock roller lifters sit lower in the bores. Or you can buy the expensive link bar style aftermarket lifters to use on your existing std base circle roller cam. Either way works fine...I've done several small base circle cam engines with no problems. You can use your timing cover but the late blocks have dowels for lining up the cover which will not be useable on the early block(unless you counterbore the block holes to take the dowels). Just use the old method of fitting the cover by using the balancer to align the cover before tightening the bolts. I probably wouldn't buy it if it wasn't std bore. Is this a replacement for your 5.0 block? |

Yeah, the plan would be to use it as the base of a slooowwww 347 build.
