I'm just wondering whether or not it's bad practice to notch pistons. With my heads, I need valve reliefs that differ to other heads and pistons specific to these heads I'd have to get brand new. I've got my eye on a couple of sets of second-hand pistons (unused) but they have the regular valve relief. Can I get them and take them to someone to notch them to suit? If so, who would I go to?
Another quick question to throw in the mix. Sorry if it seems dumb, but this is new to me. When the cylinders have been bored 30 thou, I need 4.030 pistons, right?

not sure on the notching
but with the new bore size u need pistons and rings to match

M&D engines will be able to help you Scaffy.
You can get twisted wedge specific pistons though. |

You can get twisted wedge specific pistons though. Where are they based Pete? I know the Twisted Wedge pistons are available, but I'm trying to get bits on the cheap. I'll see how much it'd set me back to do. It'll probably end up costing the same in the long run as getting the pistons brand new.

that 300rwkw ts50 from here notched the pistons I read a while ago when he used the 185afr heads. Didnt hear any drama's after that.

Mostly that's what happens but depends how much these pistons are in the first place? If you need a dummy pin for a mock up I've got one kickin around you can use. Could be worse...you could go to ranch and get it done but they'll just squash em in a lathe and you'll have to buy new pistons. |

what tool would put pistons in a lathe to notch/flycut them?
hell i have no idea on how to do it but im not that f**k silly

You don't have to clamp very hard for the chuck to grip it but there are gimps out there who will no doubt squash otherwise good quality pistons...... |

Get the block bored/honed to suit the pistons AFTER you have decided on which ones to use. There are dedicated TFS pistons available from JE, Diamond and Probe, but you could possibly modify other brands.
What piston were you looking at? I'm not going to recommend a machine shop, every time I do it bites me in the a***.

With TFS heads, pistons require very little notch with std Ford pistons.. Depending on cam specs....
I used http://www.cppistons.com/ Through Aust agent ..Quantum industries.. http://www.qri.biz/ Or email jason@qri.biz

However, the block I have has already been bored. The pistons I was looking at were a set of Keith Blacks, but I'm thinking I'll get something that's already available to suit. That way I don't have to wory about anyone f**k my s**t up, which tends to happen to me a fair bit. Trick Flow themselves do pistons to suit as well. I'm thinking about selling my house in Baldivis (I know, a bit late). If I can get what i want for it, then this block will be replaced by a Dart block and the fun times will begin!!!

I'm not a fan of the old Keith Blacks, a very heavy 'old school' design. I take it you grabbed the block from down Albany way? Get the mechanic to measure the bores exactly and see what size they actually are. Forged pistons are usually made smaller than an equivalent cast piston due the the greater expansion rate of forged alloy. So you might be able to get away with a decent forged piston.
For the money I'd look at using a Probe Forged piston, but like you say if the house sells and you get that DART block I'd go straight to a JE, CP or TFS piston.

I agree keith black is just an old hat federal mongrel piston with keith black written on it! They used to cost more than most forged ones!?

Yeah Dave, that's the one. I'll keep away from the Keith Blacks then. Thanks fellas.

Have to agree there.Bottledup is on the money, get the bores measured and then choose the piston. My only advice would be get ones with the shorter skirt and thinner ring grove which will greatly improve the way it revs and you could also look at pin height to achieve a deck height of 0 to 5 thou to improve compression. I used these speed pro pistions as they were dirt cheap but had the block deck shaved 10 thou to get a deck height of 5 thou.I'm using AFR competition 165's with a cam which has .542 int and .563 ex lift @ 50 thou and no probs with hitting the pistons. ![]()
