I may have missed it, but what are those extractors? Very similar to the common NZ ones, although ours are pretty much all 100% sans cat.

Change the whole column. Looks pretty straight forward.

Is changing the column accessories over that difficult?

no, its pretty straight forward. the wiper/indicator arms are just held on position by a clamp, the only slightly difficult bit is removing the 2 shear bolts holding the steering lock and ignition switch.. otherwise thats it, there is 2 bolts holding the upper column to the dash, the 5 or 6 bolts holding the lower column to the firewall and the 1 bolt on the intermediate shaft..

or you can leave the steering locks alone and just change ignition barrels, for that you only need the keys and a thin allen key or similar to put into the hole under the ignition barrel with key on acc then remove and replace with your original.

We meet again timing belt!

Shortly after I changed the timing belt on Fiona's car, it developed a coolant leak which I thought was not the water pump. I was wrong. So today I replaced it.

To remove the pump, you need to remove the timing belt and the timing covers and the crank pulley and the accessory belts. And then once you have freed the pump from behind everything you can think of, you find that it won't come out going under the car, because it hits the chassis rail, and it won't go past the camshaft sprocket. This means you have to take that off and that means you have to take the rocker cover off.

Image

Looking good for 202,000 km. Luckily, Repco had 1 rocker cover gasket in stock.

Image

But, eventually I got it all back together with new water pump, new coolant and new top and bottom radiator hoses complete with proper worm drive clamps. I hate those spring clamps that you have to use pliers to take on and off.

Ever thought "If I'm gonna be doing this, I should be doing this as well."? I should have done the water pump when I did the cam belt. Oh well.

-Evan.
