In a SQ system, is it better to run a monoblock to power your sub with a low impedence load, say 2 ohm. Or do you only do that for volume in a SPL system?

Good question - Many people will argue that Class D monoblocks are more suited to SPL and that a Proper SQ system should consist of a powerfull class A/B amp.

The only benefit i see from that is higher dampening factor, but if you get a monoblock with reasonable dampening factor to start with then it's not a problem.

I competed last year running an Earthquake monoblock with modest dampening factor on paper (still using it) and seemed to do quite well despite what some people might say.

The choice is yours, i have always used Class D monoblocks and had success, i have not been able to distinguish the difference between mine and those running class a/b, but some may have better hearing than me.....

$1500?

Thats hardly budget in my books.

i spent about $360 on a subwoofer, box, amp and wiring package,

the sub is sony, the amp audioline.

It sounds pretty good, dont need to spend that kinda money.

Your right you dont need to spend that sort of money -- but -- to get a Budget SQ or SPL system i think you do. You may have taken it out of context.
I said a basic system upgrade starts with a headunit change (costing maybe $300) then the next step would be some front splits, then a good quality 4 channel amp then a sub + box + wiring.

Your $360sub, box and amp combo doesn't include
- Headunit
- Wiring
- Splits

As mentioned
Splits would add $300+
Heaunit $300+
Wiring $80 +
Good quality 4 Channel amp (not 2 channel) $250+ difference

So thats $930 + your $360 = $1290

I was also allowing for a custom box to be built, installed and carpeted not a prefax one

At the end of the day if you wish to go absolute budgtet then you can get a system for

Co-Axils = $100
Headunit = $200
Cheap 4 channel amp = $150
Cheap Sub = $80
Wiring = $35
Total = $565

But in my opinion that is not a Budget SQ or SPL system, thats just a - budget system full stop....

Aaron, what in your opinion is the best suited front speaker to replace the standard premium sound ones in an EF front door application?

I assume you mean coaxials int he doors?

I do not normally give opinions on speaker type as there are so many i have not heard but from what i have heard.

I liked (and have actually owned all of the below speakers)
- JBL - (high power handlingh)
- MB Quartz (nice and clear and bright (metal dome tweeter can be a little bright at very high volumes)
- Pioneer (nice & smooth & readily available to audition)
- Jaycar (the ones with the titanimum swivel tweeter. It makes it easy to angle the tweeter for improved soundstage)


If you have a little more money then these 2 are very smooth and natural sounding but expect to pay $300 - $350 for them in co-axials
- Boston Accoustics
- Focal

You will get major benefits from sound deadening the doors throughly too.

Yeah naa that kind of budget is pretty spot on Aaron, when i think about it. My setup:

Alpine HU 787IE $399
Sub- Alpine Type S 12' (Including custom made box) $400
Axis Audio 2 channel amp $150
Wiring $100
Rear fill Alpine 6.5' Type S coax $150
Sound deading the boot $80

Considering this is all i have atm the cost is still about $1000+

Then once the Front stage has been upgraded then it will be roughly $1500 ive spent on the whole system. To me thats a pretty decent budgeted system. sounds great as well.

So yeah i can definately agree with you on that one

XR Fan your system sounds good, simple and good gear if it's installed correctly it would be quite nice.

There are different typers of sound deadaening for different applications.

You can use a foam type with contours and ridges directly behind midrange drivers to prevent standing waves, this is especially true in doors.

The stick on stuff is good for stopping rattles and gettign rid of any ring on that happens with metal panels ringing in sympathy.

Spray and paint on stuff are available for hard to reach places..

Yeah as for install with my car.... i cant exactly go extravagant with the Sub in the boot i really dont have much too work with, the cons of having a 80L LPG tank in the boot Everything else is pretty good thou. I like the way ive mounted my amp.

The sound deading atm ive just used underbody sound proofing spray, used a 2 full cans. BUT i have just ordered in some more sound proofing, getting a heap of the proper stuff in a couple of weeks. Costing me bloody $100, its just called Sound Shield, like a really dense foam matting with glue underneath. I used a heap of it when i had my XF infact i used about $200 worth when i did the parcel shelf lol!! Bloody works thou.

I made a set of 6'9's running off a HU sound like 12' sub!! The bass just sounded sooo much nicer and clearer. I was very happy with the way that went. You can buy the Sound Shield stuff at Autobarn.

Top Article there Aaron. CAA use to be a fantastic resource for this stuff, but from what i can tell it has been dieing a slow death.

With regards to a budget SQ setup you covered it very very well. In refrence to the "you dont need to spend $1500" comments, you covered this aspect very very well.

My setup is by no means a pro SQ setup however, what you listed for $1500 would make for a more than adiquate 1st SQ setup, all for the cost of my HU and power cable.

Thanks, CAA has some good discussion, but a lot of other not so good discussion around it so it can be hard to find the good info amoungst the bad. Also a lot of people there claim to be experts and you are sometimes unsure who to listen to.

Your system sounds great, well over $1,500 there.

As for Supremo's i had a pair i was selling and they took ages to sell off. No one realised the value in them and once sold i had a few messages showing interest. Oh well thats the way it goes.
