hey guys, as the subject states the demister on the rear windshield went bang and shatterd the entire windshield...any ideas why this would happen? when i pulled over to look at it, the glass above the connecter on the drivers side had been blown out...any ideas why this would happen?

Sounds like the glass must have been super cold and as soon as heat was applied it shattered.
Hence never poor warm or hot water over iced up windscreens. Same result.

i probably should have mentioned that the demister was on for about an hour before hand...and only 3 or 4 or the lines actually worked

if only a few of the elements work there would have been much more current going through them, and therefore more heat which would have caused uneven heating and expansion of the glass and then bang!

Do these things actually work? The one on my EL is useless, after like 30 minutes I've got like 10cm of usable space to look out of.

Hi, How can this be ? There is 12 volts across it regardless of how many elements work or don't. There will be less heat in total if several element are faulty.

correct, but the effects of the uneven heating can still shatter glass. your car is close to 20 years old now so the rear windscreen has gone through a lot of shock,vibration and heating/cooling cycles.

no of BMW volvo etc that have done same thing - normally due to driving thru COLD patch of air with hot screen....
