Hi

My car really struggles when I turn the A/C on. Doesn't matter if I'm doing 10km/h or 120km/h, as soon as I hit the go switch, there's a jolt and the car seems to work much harder. The fan stays on and on hot days the temp gauge even gets north of "C". The air is cool, but I wouldn't say its icy by any means. I'm going to take it to a local auto sparkie, but just wanted to check if anyone has any ideas on what might be the cause. I've done a ton of research but am yet to come across the exact same problem. Also, I'm probably in for a heart attack at the cost of replacing any A/C parts, yeah? Considering the work that goes into replacing a headlight bulb on the old girl...

Thanks for any advice you can offer. :D

Very interested in this as my na occasionally jolts when I turn the ac on and its the same as yours. It cold but not icy ive been thinking it may need to be regassed but that doesnt explain the jolting every so often.

check if compressor is siezing ? if so may be compressor- low gas - oil etc.
disconnect plug at compressor and test drive to rule out if electrical system is affecting with ac on or not ?

As Ted has said, check the condition of the AC Compressor. Pop the bonnet and have a look at it while someone turns on the AC.

Is the car auto or manual? Fan engages as soon as you engage the AC so that is fairly normal. Please explain the "North of C" as the temp gauge say normal. Where in the normal range does the gauge read?

Hi,

The temperature gauge very rarely gets past the "C" into the normal range, unless it's a very hot day and the A/C is on, or I'm idling in traffic (it usually gets a third of the way into the normal range in this situation).

The car is a manual.

I'll try the suggestions and come back with my results if that's ok. Thanks very much for your help Ted and SWC. Darcy, hope this helps you too.

With the engine stopped, rotate the clutch hub.

What a load of s**t. Replace the ac pump and get it regassed.

1) Get the AC System degassed.
2) Take off the serpentine belt.
3) Unplug the wiring to the compressor.
4) Unbolt the pipework to the AC Pump, don't loose the O rings.
5) Remove the 3 bolts holding the AC Pump to the Block, There are 3 spacers between the AC Compressor and the block
6) Lift out the AC Pump.
7) Install is the reverse.
8) Do not engage the AC while the AC System is degassed.
9) Get the asystem regassed.

You can test it by pressing the charging nipple, like a tyre valve. If no gas comes out you are fine.

Don't breath it in and cover the valve with a rag when you try it.

Sounds like there's no gas - so no lubrication of the compressor, the scrolls have probably ground themselves into oblivion, hence the grinding.
The pressure switch on the TX valve should disable the compressor, but slow gas loss usually destroys the compressor first.
So you'll need to find the leak, and possibly metal shavings may be in the system.
