Do i need to modify anything in my headlight unit to fit the HIDs?
Like the plastic cap at the back of the head light?

Yes you will need to drill a hole in the back of the cap to run the globe wires out to connect to the ballast. The globes have 3 connectors coming of them.

what 93EB said. In my EB I was lazy and left the cap off. They were only in there for like 2 weeks then I removed them when I sold the car

Only thing is yes you can leave the cap of but the fan will blow dust and dirt inside the lense and eventually cause problems. 89SVO im sure would have modified the caps if they were going to be permanately on the car.
Ive put rubber grommets in mine and now are pretty good.
How long they last depends on how much you use them and how stable your cars electrical system is i suppose.

I put my car in front of a brick wall and adjusted the beam down against the lines in the bricks so they were even. Also used my BA as a reference to see where roughly they should aim. Have not been flashed by any oncoming traffic yet but thats because i assume im not blinding them.
