I've had an intermittent problem since I purchased my EF 96 Fairmont where sometimea it doesnt start. This never bothered me as the guy I got it off told me give the bottom left of the wheel a thump and it will work, which it always did, untill today. Knocked up about 1500km yesterday no issue and then this morning when I went to leave nothing. It sounds the same as always where there is the tick when you turn the key but it doesn't fire or turn over.
ive done loads of research all day and it sounds like the bcm. Ive it whipped out now but I dont know what people mean when they say to dry soldier it?
Also I saw if you cross the blue and red wires you can bypass to bcm to see is that the problem but I dont have a blue wire?
Anyone able to help me out with some advice? Really in a rush to get back on the road

does interior light work ?
is smartlock light turning off when ignition turned on?

bridge red with blue trace wires(2)at BCM- bypasses start circuit thru BCM -

dry solder joint refers to the solder joints inside BCM not beeing soldered correctly which would require to be resoldered if this is actually the cause of problem -may also have faulty relay etc. inside BCM.............

Interior Light works (& Boot light works as I saw in one thread)

Smart light turns off when I turn the key and the usual Red ! comes on

I don't have a red and blue wire is my problem. I have a red/white, red/ yellow and what is either an orange/navy or perhaps orange/black, hard to see. These are the the wires coming from the steering column side (So top) I assume?

If I bypass it I will sort the problem without fixing the relay?

Currently in Broome & supposed to be in Perth by Friday with my car and tools, every mechanic here either doesn't have interest or is absolutely crazy expensive (400+ just to look + cost to fix it). If I can get it to Perth I will have time and money to invest in a proper solution!

BCM is under dash above handbrake - multiple plugs - start circuits are red/blue trace -

or under bonett near battery in front of Main fuse links-
remove plastic cover to access relays- rear relay is starter relay -
remove and bridge with a piece of wire- circuits corressponding to terminals 30 and 87 (marked on relay) with ignition on -in Park -handbrake on should crank while held bridged - disconnect wire once started

By bridge do you mean remove relay and put a wire between 30 & 87 direct?

This is a video of what happens when I turn key - https://www.dropbox.com/s/89kw1iaupiel2 ... 3.mp4?dl=0

yes bridge socket side connections corresponding with relay terminals - should feed power to starter

smartlock light flashing is a worry as BCM may be faulty(BCM also cuts injectors out) -

try turning reds on for 30 to 60 min then retry or wreckers for another BCM - reds on for 30 to 60 min then retry

do you have another key to try ?
you can also try bridging starter push on terminal to power to crank starter

No other key unfortunately.
Not sure what you mean by the starter to terminal solution so I will try the relay option and let you know how I get on.
Thanks

When I crossed 30 & 87 the engine turned over but didn't start. Any idea how to get it to fire?

reds on for 30 to 60 min to download key then retry after that I would say -
as per SWC -

try wreckers for another BCM - reds on for 30 to 60 min to download key then retry

ring them they might deliver for you?
may have a faulty ECU relay - does your fuel pump operate for a second or two when ignition turned on -
