Was the battery shorted or put on the wrong terminals or anything ? I have disconnected my battery many times with no issues.

Can you start it?
Sounds like you have a BCM (Body Control Module) problem. They are an issue on BA/BF's.
Take to an Auto Elect and have him check, if you DO need a NEW BCM, they are fairly cheap on Ebay, I have one here myself, a High Series one.
If it IS indeed the BCM, I would suggest you have it changed by either the Auto Electrician, if he can, or at a Ford dealer because, when you change them over they have to be programmed to your car and you Key has to be programmed as well.

You could try:

OR

RW Browns Auto Elect Parramatta

I used to work at Thomson Ford and they were good customers of ours.
If you do need a BCM, I have a high series one here you could have cheap. :D

You can use a high series, they will suit an XT. The BRAND new ones are meant for either low or high series. :)
