on an EF... where does the tacho signal come from?
is it a single output from the ECU or more complex?
any one know what kinda signal it is?

I think it is a digital signal from the ecu. Either way a tacho output is provided in the diagnostic port next to the fuses. This is a frequency varying signal with 3 pulses per revolution of the engine.
