Lol, bit out of left field mik.... but if its pinging, it may be running lean... meaning you'll be getting great economy for the short lifespan of the engine :) I dont see that being terribly sensible tho....

Pinging will have a couple of effects. When its occuring, the car will go nowhere. All that energy is being diverted into self destruction of the engine... leaves acceleration lacking a bit....

It'll also (over time) wear out the ring/cylinder... lower compression, less efficient, more fuel consumption...

Oh yeah I know the effect of pinging, tuning the 351 has taught me that much. Rang 13FORD and their solution was use premium, when I told them I already am they said get different spark plugs, so spose we'll try these new plugs then if it doesnt solve the problem we'll have to escalate the issue.

if its running lean, the plugs will come out white and s**t. how many k's has the car done? might be time for an filter change?

you could put a litre of metho in a full tank if the octane boost doesnt work, to soak up any water that might be in there too

Get your injectors & upper cylinder cleaned {carbon built up}, cheap way to zero in on the fault. disconnect the battery as well.

Dont worry too much about what the trip computer says in your focus. My ute doesn't have a trip computer in it so good old maths is they way. When calculating what mileage you are getting do you oull in to the petrol station, and read the odometer, and then work it out based on the capacity of your tank? Unless you run your tank dry each time you take it to the petrol station, you could be coming up with a wrong figure.

The best way to work out how much fuel you have used is to fill it up, reset odometer. When you get near empty go and fill it up. The bowser will probably read 50L or something like that. Assuming the tank was full when you filled it up last, then if oyu have just put 50L in, then you had 5L left, so its safe to say you used 50L to get your 430km. do your calculations on that and see if it helps. This might be why the trip computer says you should be getting a lot more k's from your tank.

I have a 68L tank, but even if I drive it until the fuel gauge wont go any lower, when I fill it up I can only get 57L no matter what.

If im talking crap them you can all correct me....

yeah, ecu reset might be an idea, but you'd think if the engine couldn't learn to stop pinging something else is going on
