Hi all,
I have my dads NL V8 on gas which I have replaced the radiator, the ps pump, thermostat, coil, idlers and battery as she overheated but does not fire up now.

Should I get a gizmo to read the 20 pin outlet codes to find out the issue(s)?
Interior lights work.
Smartlock icon turns off when key in.
Have disconnected battery to allow comp reset.

I am a poor simple fool who understands the old school way with carbies etc...

Any feedback muchly appreciated.
Cheers
Steve

If it was overheating, why would you change the Powersteer Pump. coil, idlers and battery?

Do you have fuel and or spark at the plugs?

Does the fuel pump prime?

Thanks for the reply.
This is very much a sentimental fix up as my dad died earlier in the year and left car to me.
Idlers were noisy, radiator stuffed, battery likewise, and show me a CII ps pump that doesn't leak and I'll wager it is out of fluid.
No spark so I tried replacing coil but now throw my hands up to the electronic gods.
Hence the initial question.

So I take it that you still have no spark?

Yeah, no spark.
Is there a plug in OB1Kenobi reader thing that will tell me what the issue/s is/are?
Thanks steve.

Do you have power at the coil?

If yes then it could be the TFI Module or the Hall effect sensor.

If no, it could be smartlock.
Have you tried smacking the dash just where your left knee would be while cranking the car?

Ah yeah, power at the coil. What is a TFI and hall effect thingy?

Smartlock icon on dash disappears when ignition switched on so I guessed it was okay? If not I am sure I would like to bash the dash. :)

TFI Module is the grey module on the side of the dizzy, Hall Effect sensor is in the internals of the dizzy as it is electronic (Replaces the point for simplicity).

Are you getting spark from the coil?

I said "Smack" the dash not "Bash" it. BCM is located (BCM contains the Smartlock) there where your left knee would be on the lower dash below where the door lock button is. Standard issue giving the dash a smack with these. If you are getting power to the coil then Smartlock should be fine. Doesn't hurt it but.

Ignition wise, reading codes will only reveal if the PIP is erratic or not existant - meaning the car is dead, and the hall effect sensor is cactus. It is rare, but does happen.
You're best to google search on coil TFI systems (and here too), and have a read so you understand how they work, and the terms PIP, SPOUT, etc.
I take it you understand how a battery coil ignition works - in this case, the TFI and Engine computer handle timing, dwell, advance, etc. A hall effect and chopper wheel create the PIP, which is a reference for TDC for each cyl.

IIRC smartlock only affects starter motor and injector pulse (someone confirm).

Hey fellas,
I did a course today and pulled the module. Anyway I tested it using the sbftech.com guide and it shows it is okay.

Any thoughts.

You say you have power to the coil but are you getting spark to the Dizzy?
