phongus hows the bonnet clearance issues goin ?

It is a tight fit. Bonnet fire proof lining rubs against it. If I was to remove the lining, it'll have enough clearance but will probably start to hit the bonnet everytime there is a rough idle. Also had to cut the bolt hole thing on the BBM that's used to hold the stock intake to make more clearance.

When I got koni yellows put into the car, it caused more issues with the intake hitting the top of the shocks...where the knob is for adjusting the stiffness. Got around it by using an old blown heater hose, cutting it up and putting it over the top of the shocks, now the koni shock is protected and no more noises...

Been running fine since.

Well today I finally installed a ducted CAI. I dont have pictures but I might get some tomorrow and chuck them up. [PICS ARE UP]

I bought a piece of 3" plastic rainwater pipe. would have liked to get a bigger pipe but the only bigger ones were too big.

First I removed the airbox and relays. The relays were a pain in the a*** when I was trying to cut the hole, ended up cutting 2 of them accidently cause I just couldnt push them far enough out of the way  anyway, I cut the hole from the top of the mount for the relays, around either side of it and in kind of a pentagon shape. I used a grinder for as much as I could and drilled holes in what I couldnt get to. I left one of the gaps to big had to bend the metal down and under but it's fine.

Next was the hole in the air box. I drilled a hole in the airbox and used a jigsaw for the rest. Took the airbox and pipe over to the car, measured it to size and cut. The hole was boddgy as all f**k but I managed to fill it with come gap sealer that available at Bunnings or whatever. I added a layer of silicone on top of the gap sealer when it was almost dry, gave it a smooth coating and fully sealed of any holes.

The pipe had a blue piece on one end that wouldnt come off, so I put it to use by drilling two holes in it and threading zipties through. I made the hole just big enough (by chance :D) to accomadate the zipties. I installed the airbox and tied the pipe to the front. :) now just had to solder the f***in relay wires back together ! :?

Finally finished. Took her for a lap and it felt like it did give it a little more, not alot but maybe 2kws? :) Well as long as it's done it's there for the future and when I install to POD filter it should give it another 2kws :P. Had to give her a strap and see if it stopped the car from dying almost completely at 140. Yep it fixed it alright, keep it goin strong till the limiter :D First time I've ever hit it, or any limiter so it was pretty cool :P

After that I took her home to check to see that the gap sealer hadnt blown out or something. The airbox was fine but I noticed that the regular snorkel was HOT! Very Hot! I took the BA snorkel off and clogged the hole with a cloth and went for a strap. It almost felt somewhat smoother but felt like it lost a little bottom end, not sure. So me and my girlfriend decided to go for a mad cruise out about 50kms to this river. The car felt good the whole way there and back. I had to push the accelerater a noticeable amount less in to achieve the same speed and had my foot almost resting on it @ 150. It drove amazing well @ 170 :) I didnt want to keep it up for too long and fluxuated between 140 and 170. Low profile tyres and nice suspension really makes a difference travelling at that speed, it felt no faster than 120 in any other car I've been in.

Anyway arrived home to find we left a bag out there  I decided to the get the snorkel and wrap it in al-foil to stop it from heating up so much you could touchnt it. I'd already tested 2 things, might as well try something else if I have to go for another drive >< Went out there and the car definatly picked up some bottom end. Got home, checked the snorkel and.. cold! The outside layer of al-foil was a bit hot but apart from that, it was cold. :) So now I've got 2 CAIs :D

Going to add more layers when I get some more al-foil. did i follow up test today by putting my hand inside the snorkel - it was hot but not as hot as it could have been. im happy with it and am sure more alfoil will turn it into a CAI.

So that's my air intake. Enjoy! Surprisingly simple to do when you could be f***ed  and works f***in sweet! Gonna hunt around for some bigger pipe - if anyone has any suggestions, speak up. I'll try get some photos up tomorrow or something.

Does anyone know anything about areodynamics? What would be going on inside the airbox with 2 intakes? I also have a tiny hole in the bottom of the airbox? What about if there was a hole in the back top-left corner?

Have a good one guys,
IR

The OE setup may have been designed to create swirl and therefore drop some large particles before going through the filter, not sure though. You know there's something not so good happenning if part of the filter get's dirtier than others.

water drain

My current thinking on the air intake into the air box is the less resistance the better for performance and fuel economy, and the colder the air the better for performance but maybe worse fuel economy due to more pumping losses at the throttle butterfly. Could be complex though.

Yeah figured the hole was for water, but trying to figure out what would be going on inside the box with air flowing in from 2 directions and potentially trying to be pushed out through the little hole and forcing the air into the engine due to the bottle-neck at the hole and the only other exit being through the engine... dunno but I'll get some pics up soon

but yes, aerodynamics complex too, though often at least some understanding can be arrived at.

I know this might sound stupid or somthing, but would it be possible to duct a pipe from your A/C to your air intake. So on hot days your getting some cold air in there. Would that work or would it be a waste?

i had at one stage thought about somehow running the intake pipe around the cold a/c line so when you got the a/c on it will chill the intake air..
but to be honest it would be a waste as the aircon would draw more power than the cold air could give it..

if you want to cool the intake down just add nos..

Yeah i wouldnt mind seeing if it was possible. Maybe shutting off all the vents inside the car so all the presure goes into the intake. Might help if there was enough air getting in there.
