Well, after due deliberation, I lashed out and bought a J3 from T.I. Performance.

Should have done it years ago!! Best $200 I have spent for a long time! Much more torque, and better acceleration. The engine just seems much more tractable.

Jason has also been answering my (sometimes) inane questions, and has been very helpful.

Installation was simple: 30 mins

Would recommend it to anybody :D

I always pull them apart to get proper access to the back side for sanding and an alcohol wipe. Nothing worse than a poor contact 3 months down the track.

Thanks for the kind words creeture3!

Cheers,
Jason

I cleaned mine I thought very thoroughly - My J3 chip will out of the blue after a few months start playing up, crap running, won't restart.
I did solder tin the ECU fingers - still the same.
I find if I pull the chip, ECU runs fine, and if I pull the chip, and reseat it, car runs fine again. After a few months, same will happen. I don't disconnect power, so I don't think the KAM gets corrupted.
I don't reflash the chip either, so I guess it has to be a connection issue.

Clean the port with metho or rubbing alcohol? Oils from touching the port will cause the copper to corrode over time. Could be the cause?

Another common cause is not tightly taping in the chip as per the instructions. On the extreme end, I've had customers with no kick panel and a loose ECU with untaped chip sitting with spanners and screwdrivers in the foot well! You can imagine how that ended.

I've had chips sit untouched in an ECU for well over 12 months without any issue, so when done properly they can be left alone.

Cheers,
Jason

Yeah, understand all that Jase - only thing as I say, I solder tinned the ECU fingers each side.

Even then though, solder does still corrode over time.

Ah, sorry I misread that as you did*n't* tin.

Solder actually corrodes more quickly and the uneven surface makes for a worse contact. If you can solder sucker it off you may find its more reliable.

Cheers,
Jase

Yeah, tried to get a reasonably thin uniform surface, not easy though.

Thanks for the comments.
