I was just wondering if it is possiable to Tune the early E-series ECU's ? or is a chip required if so is there one available for them how much (roughly are they worth)

OR is it not worth the hastle and just go for the aftermarket ECU?

You need a chip to re-tune the EA-EL EEC's. CAPA Eliminator chip, or Chiptorque J3 chip will do the job...

Possibly....CAPA chip is only $800.

Custom tune for mild n/a engine should be no more than $200-300 (?)

Yes, about $2500 for the dealer software. But he didn't say he wanted to tune himself??

so it sounds like i would be better off hunting a 2nd hand aftermarket computer, rather than trying to chip the E-series one?
