hi
well is seems that my 3.9 mpi has started leaking coolant from the head under the no5 plug(yes the typical head gasket problems)
im after opinions on . should i just shave the head put a new gasket and maybe a new cam..
or put a 4lt in it . i know the 4lt had about 9kw more but being a second hander having the risk of not knowing how long the 4lt will last before blowing a gasket but do you guys think i would be better off putting a cam & head gasket on the 3.9.????????

im not sure what i should do...considering the cost of the head gasket and cam ect would be about the same price as a secondhand 4ltr.. :? :?

to make matters worse i was just about to put a nos kit on it!!

if you plan to go with an EF/EL motor and serpentine plus BBM etc, then it could be worth it.

otherwise stick with the devil you know, the 9kw increase was probably more ecu changes then engine anyway.

i hear it was in the cylinder head. so why not chuck a recoed 4lt Head on and have the best of both worlds?

yea its mpfi
is the 4ltr head different in any way (valve size, chamber size or port size)
i know ef/el heads have different port sizes but not sure about eb/ed.
at the moment im considering a new head gasket and i might try a alted cam??
the engine otherwise is still strong for a 3.9 (maybe a freak) it still runs a 15.7 1/4mile..

i would like to know where the 4ltr gets its extra 9kw from is it just the 100cc larger engine or is it a combination of things???

It's a combo of things. Increased capacity, better intake manifold, ecu, etc etc...

try some wynns radiator stop leak first, cost $10 and comes in a purple bottle. Very good for small head gasket coolant leaks. And try re-torque the head bolts...

yea! after looking at my friends workshop manual there is only 35cc difference between 3.9 and 4ltr....3.9 is 3949cc and 4.0l is 3984cc.
the 3.9 has smaller combustion chambers then the 4lt and a different cam profile..
so now all im going to do is look at what head and cam to use.???

would there be any gain by using a (non smartlock) eb 4ltr ecu in the ea 3.9???

you'd pretty much try and use the computer from what ever car the new head and cam comes from. remembering that it you use and EF/EL head and cam you'r best off with the bbm intake aswell. or use the old EA cam in the EF/L head.
