All I can say is take an LS1 for a drive, I was certain that I was driving a 3.6 and thought it was gutless for a V6. My wife's 3.0L Magna takes off heaps better. For driving around town or for towing the LS1 is absolutely pathetic.

i would say the 6 will be the winner on the day..(just)

from my experience i went from a ed xr6 auto to ebxr 5.0l auto to a ed6 auto then a ea6. 5 speed..
all had similar mods. extractors,k&nfilter,ect.
the 5.0 had 3.45 diff aswell as the ed xr6 and the other 6,s had 3.08..

and all 6,s were faster than the v8 over the 1/4.
the 5.0 ran a best of 15.9 with 3.45
the ed6 ran a 15.8..with 3.08. so close to the 5.0 its funny.
the ed xr ran a 15.6 with 3.45
and the ea has run a best of 15.5...with 3.08
all these figures are so close there wouldnt be much in it
so i guess as said above it depends on the condition of the car and the driver..lol
i loved the torque and sound of the v8 but i was disapointed with its performance that why ive had 6,s ever since..

I will agree with TROYMAN, I had an ED 5.0 with pacemakers and 2.5 zorst and an XH with xr6 donk at the same time, both auto. The 5.0 was really nice to drive and listen to but the 4.0 is noticeably quicker around town. Please note I am talking about the 99.999% of the driving we do not just the rare trip to the strip. Strangely enough I tend to focus my modifications on the 99.999% rather than the strip.

edv8wagon - don't be judging all ls1's on your experience with a crewman. also in std form there is A LOT of torque control software in play. the piston slap oil burning issues were in the early ones but from vx on they are a pretty sweet motor. like i said. dollar for dollar, no falcon 6 will get in the same postcode as an ls1.

also the 6 in question is not an xr6 but a el ghia. same running gear yes but not the same performance. i'm sticking with the 8. yes i own one but i can't compare as its modified but i still think it can get the job done.

its gona be close.....
im thinking the six by a whisker at the top end of the track
power is identical and weight so close it dont matter
gearing is the same, only way i can see an advantage is the i6s wider torque range, stock 8s realy die in the a** up in the revs

of course the smallest mods on either will be telling
exhausts could definately tip the scales

im backing the 6 tho

ive owned 2 i6s and and currently own a eb xr8 so i got no axe to grind

hurry up and get it on

I have driven both the 4.0 and the 5.0 and the 4.0 seems noticably quicker in the experiences I have had.. However there are so many different variables on the engine, car, and driver that the only way to found out is for and your dad to drag. And even then its not to say two cars with the same engines and mods as yours can't have a comletely different result. It all depends on the variables. I really want the 5.0 to win however i think the 4.0 will win by at the very least two car lengths. Make sure you let everyone know of the result.

I took both of them for a run today back to back.

The I6 tickford, seems to have a little wider rev range. At the end of first gear I reckon its doing another 5-10km/h than the 5.0V8. Even though they are geared the same???

The 5.0 feels a little stronger off the line and first gear actually feels a little shorter?? But as revs rise, I reckon the i6 has more in its lungs where the 5.0 says enough.

To be brutally honest, it will definately come down to the start...

Both cars running standard 15 inch wheels, standard 215/60 series tyres, both hurricane headers, both 2.5 inch exhaust systems (V8 runing 2 cats I6 one high flow) both have K&N Panels, 3.45 diff gears and weigh very very similar..

They are almost the same colour as well, one is platinum and the other is armond silver. Dad is betting on his I6 and im in the 5.0.

Ill make sure I dont eat the day I run him, every kg will count in this one.

5.0 has 82,000km, i6 has 141,000km. Both feel rock solid, always serviced etc..

Mate, i currently have a 5speed XR8, and i will say, the 6 will win, the HO Wheezer was NEVER a quick motor, to get a decent accelleration figure, the Head and inlet manifold need to be changed to the GT40P and Explorer gear

id say the 4.0 is a better engine im pretty sure anyone has seen the dyno tests on the typhoon compared to the boss and they are pushing out nealr y the same figures and the f6 is only a 4.0
