Just had a quick look under the belt cover off my 3/97 EL Fairmont and it has a 94AB head which is off the EF falcon's. I was under the impression EL's had a 95DA head and I am pretty certain the car is running the original factory head.

Is there much difference between these 2 heads. Most tuners swear by the 94AB head as being the best flowing stock head for an I6!

Cheers.

AFAIK the au head was in EL's from Feb 1998 onwards.

With regards to perfomance i dont know, but i have heard AU motors apparently alot smoother than earlier falcons.

I wouldnt say there is too much difference though, apart from lesser aftermarket cam choice

by the way, id think something like a 96DT would flow better than a 94AB?

96DT is EL Hybrid tickford head.
95DT is the pre feb-98 EL ticky casting.
94AB is the casting that is said to ahve the biggest ports, not necessarily the most flow or the best performance.
Don't know how it compares to a 95DA though, I've never even seen a 95DA.
Late EDs got bitza motors, some got the fully counterweighted EF crank and EF head.
Or could have just had a headswap in it's life, pretty hard to say.

From a Jim Mock Article;

The EF/EL head uses nice large ports and runners and improved combustion chamber design. Be aware, however, some ELs were released with hybrid engines using an AU-spec small-port head.

By far, the best head is that fitted to the EF/early EL. "The EF head makes good power in standard form and, when you decide to go further, they're easier to port," says Jim.

Being an earlyish EL, chances are it just got whatever s**t was left lying around after the changeover. Lots of EL's have 94AA or 94DT casting heads.

I think they started phasing the 95DA/95DT heads in mid 97.

Mine is one of the first of the EL's (as in 11/96 - 10/96 was EF), and it has the 94DT head on it. he 4 has been ground out, but you can tell that it was there.

Mine has 94DT (02/97 Ghia) cast on the head. And I know of about 10 others the same, but never seen one with the 4 ground out before. :?
