it is different on every car depending on engine condition/ how much compression the motor has, more compression means you cant advance it as far

usually sounds a bit like marbles rattling together, usually only happens under load, eg full throttle at low to mid rpm, in extreme cases all rpm under load...

just thought id post up that i advanced my timing a few minutes ago, as soon as i took it out of diagnostic mode, and put the car in gear and started to let the clutch out i noticed the difference, i needed less throttle to take off or idle around the back yard, and when i took it for a drive, i got much more power over the entire rev range, it was good because my car seems to really drop off hard in the high rev range, so now it feels much better and i can get to the redline easily, i suppose my economy will change now too? maybe my car was running with retarded ignition because the balancers slipped? it seemed to run fine like a standard car but the difference with advancing 2-3 degrees is amazing, and its free :D dont know if ill try and throw any more timing in it, maybe when the weather isnt so hot :x

Good stuff bry, I'm waiting to get a timing light gun so I can give mine a go. I have no idea where the bolt is to loosen it though, I still can't manage to find it around the dizzy cap... and when I have to turn it do I do it by hand or the socket?

you can go under the car and see it above the oil filter.

you loosen the bolt just enough so that you cant start the car and it doesnt move, but you can move it by hand, if your looking front on at the engine the bolt is behind the dizzy, turn it counterclockwise(only a very very small amount will move it 2-4 degrees )

i have just gotten my car out on the highway in top gear, no pinging and the weathers pretty hot, might try and advance it a little more but i dont wanna push it, the engine under load at low rpm used to get a vibrate up but thats all gone now, and same with backing down gears hard, i know i have more economy because i swtiched the dash board into diagnostic mode and watched the instant L/100km and it was much better, i do run 98 octane though

^^ lol  .

i rekon your fuel economy should either stay the same or get better coz your useing the fuel better so less is needed for the same result.
but coz you will keep pushing it coz thers more power it will get worse. haha

happens with v8s alot

sounds like yours is going to blow up, getting a tune done and complaining the idle quality is s**t, TICK TICK BOOM for you, not for me,

You gotta bridge it so it goes into base timing mode, have the engine running and then adjut the timing(whilst the motor is running) you turn the dizzy anti clockwise to advance and clockwise to retard. You only move it a little at a time, say turn it slowly and when you here the engine revs Pock up ( only a little) stop there, lock the dizzy and turn it off, un bridge it and take it for a dive, up a steep hill full throttle about half way up. If you hear it pinging back it off.
Not sure how to earth the ecu on a el my ea has a simple plug you ground.

Okay so I did the timing just now, this is what it looks like after it goes into the mode. I took it for a drive and didn't hear any weird noises or rattles, but how far is this exactly? I didn't feel any difference yet btw.
