I advanced the timing on the EL (stock timing is plus or minus 2 degrees from TDC). Running on premium fuel now........

Advanced it to about 4-5 degrees BTDC and the car accelerates better off the line and has a little bit more grunt.

Cheap mod for El owners, sorry EF owners the old coil packs required a chip ( very pricey)........

Would it be possible to change the mounting of the crank position sensor on the efs so that it changes the timing?

I find its hard to adjust the timing on the EL's (and not just because the dizzy is in a prick of a location) but because there are no incremental marks on the balancer. :(

Will the computer still retard the timing for a lesser grade if you can't find a 98 octane bowser?

If the engine knocks, it will pull timing. Its not the way you want to do it though.

Easy to adjust timing on my EF :)

Just a matter of time before a bigger knock, then it would be to late.
your knock sensor says: oops, I'm a couple of mili-seconds to slow!

one way to stop the knock is to adjust throttle position sensor or for chip gear try a shop in auckland called xL performance they have a web page and the owner is ford man he can also source good piggy back gear and solid chips so best of luck

I dont know where you get this idea of changing the throttle position sensor to stop knocking. TPS has nothing to do with timing.

Yes, the idea is not to have any pinging at all. The knock sensor is there as a safety net, not as a way of maximising timing.

the reason he is knocking is not becoause of timing it is detonation on initial accell do sum homework and process of elimination tps will richen enough to stop the knock on initial anything after that the timing should not be were it is

The TPS is used for accel enrichment and also in switching between open and closed loops - nothing to do with timing. I know this because I have seen the tables in the Ford EEC.

So what you are saying is put as much timing as you like in, then squirt more fuel to stop pinging???

Messing with the TPS will only stop pinging if the pinging is caused by a lean spike on tip in. If your running too much timing in the first place the TPS wont help.
