an alloy head should be visible to be an aluminium coulour? and is not painted,, as far as im aware the cast iron heads were painted black.. could always scratch it with something aluminium will be easy to scratch and leave a nice shiny mark?

Alloy Head XDs also had an "Alloy Head" badge on each guard.

If you are still having trouble identifying whether its cast or alloy, try sticking a magnet to it. It won't stick to an alloy head.

The exhaust is different too. it's hard to explain, but the shape of the manifold is different. On a cast iron head, the pipes all come down in the same direction. On alloy, 1,2,3 slope to the back of the car, and 4,5,6 slope to the front. e.g ////// cast iron \\\/// alloy head

but anyways, degrease it. alloy is bright. cast iron is dark
