Can i ask a dumb question....why?

I have an EF alternator and bracket left over and was just looking at an AU long motor minus a few accessories and had until now assumed that it would have fitted....is it just a bracket issue?

yes it's a bracket issue.
if you have a look, you will see the difference, it's pretty obvious so you won't miss it.
the stator is also 6mm or so thicker than ef/el so a spacer must be made up if you wish to change internals.
