I had a very similar problem to this, and I found out it was the Ignition Coil (after it shat itself on the city-west-link one night.)

Might not be relevent, (as I have an EL, with Dizzy) but perhaps change/check Coilpack if all your other fixes don't work?

Scratch this... Still running odd, and starting bad.

(for a refresh just in case no-one has seen,)when cold it starts fine, but then splutters until its hot when given any throttle.. almost like the "choke" is turned off too early)

When "warm-ish" (that is, after its been warmed and has been running, but is then shut down for about an hour or so) It won't start on the first crank, but will start fine on the second crank (bizarre I know, but its repeatable, and been doing exactly the same think for months. *shrugs* no-one can figure it out.

Oh by the way sorry for the hi-jack... I'll shut up now :)

If your gonna use Injector cleaner, use Redline SI-1. Its the only one that i know of that actually works!

When you have trouble starting the car open the engine bay and check the fuel regulator at the back of the motor for leaks this could be your problem.

Check fuel pressure..Also check fuel flow too. Also try cycling the key aw times before you start the engine.See if this changes any of the outcomes.

I've got an Au XR6 II with vct, have changed plugs, leads, injectors, air filter, fuel filter, cleaned throttle body, fuel system cleaner, had a snap on scanner on it, temp sensor fine, oxygen sensor fine, same problem that youv'e got and still exists, doesn't blow any smoke once it eventually starts, so it is not flodding or dribbling injectors????
My brother has AU XR6 III non vct have done similar work and same problem????
Mate has au standard falcon ute 4.0L once again has had similar repairs plus a new coil pack and problem still exists?????
I believe it is a fuel issue, I'm going to try a fuel pressure reg, i Can't see that being the problem but running out of ideas if that not it i'm going to mount a fuel pressure gauge to see what the hell is going on?????????????
